We moved into our current house a year ago, and the kitchen appeared to have a solid concrete floor. We made do with some old vinyl, but once we'd saved up we thought we'd get wood laminate. Unfortunately when the fitter checked the floor he said it's not level enough for laminate - there's a fairly big rise at one point.
So we left it as concrete until we decide what to do. Then the concrete started to chip off and we've realised there are tiles underneath. The concrete is actually a very thin layer, and the tiles seem in good condition (we unearthed a couple of them just to see). Unfortunately they are 1) Orange/terracotta, which doesn't go with our kitchen at all, and 2) very slippery, to the point where we wouldn't be able to walk on them.
So, we have come up with a couple of options...
-
Leave the concrete as it is, and put down vinyl on top.
-
remove the concrete and hope that the tiles underneath are level enough to put laminate on top (this would be our preference as we could match the laminate in the adjoining room).
- Remove the concrete and decorate the tiles in some way to make them a better colour and less slippery.
So what are our options for 3)? I don't think tile paint would last long in a kitchen, would it? I've seen adhesive vinyl - could we get that, and cut it to stick onto each tile? I assume we couldn't just stick it down in one piece as the gaps between the tiles would be noticeable?
Anything else we haven't thought of?
