Coasters

Boring thread alert but what materials are best for coasters?

So far I’ve used

glass - stick to the bottom of mugs, make an annoying clatter when they fall off, always worried incase it shatters
wood - chip easily, stain easily and look shit now
Wicker ones - don’t like these generally and over time bits come off and make a mess

I’ve seen some lovely ceramic ones in Sainsburys, would ceramic stick to mugs and glasses? Any other recommendations?

For everyday for DH and I, I use those small melamine trays, Emma bridgewater and Wrendale do them, I just use the coasters for visitors now as I was fed up of replacing them or cups sticking to them, trays just go in dishwasher.

my DC made some for my birthday years ago with their 5yr old drawings on, from somewhere like Photobox. they are shiny plastic with cork backs and work very well.

you can easily make them to any design you like - it doesn't have to be a photo.

Cork

PureBlackVoid · 23/02/2022 21:25

Thank you, I’ll look at cork ones. I think I could have a lot of fun with choosing my own prints!

I have some ceramic ones which I love with cork backing. I had some beaded ones but they were too flimsy and didn't protect our beautiful coffee table at all Sad

I use ceramic ones and they have no problems for wine glasses, water glasses, juice glasses, bottles of lager, coffee cups or mugs of tea (those are all the things we drink). I also think they spark joy.

Crochet ones are OK, and you can wash them if they get grubby. I had some that were multicoloured granny squares but I can't remember where I've put them.

Marble. We have some lovely ones from west elm

EmmaStone · 25/02/2022 19:23

I have lots of ceramic ones.

ThanksItHasPockets · 26/02/2022 21:49

We have slate, with felt on the base so as not to scratch the table.

My favourite ones are actually made of fabric cotton I think. I got them in Japan. Nothing sticks and they are beautiful.

SpacePotato · 26/02/2022 21:59

I have metal ones with a felt base. Cups don't stick to them.

Slate

Cork, check out the Liga ones on the RNLI shop page. Seem to be cheaper than Liga ones elsewhere and for a good cause too!

DotBall · 29/07/2022 08:54

I have wool ones in the shape of cats’ heads. They can be wiped or washed in the sink as long as they are dried flat.

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/07/2022 08:56

Cork. They’re lovely. I also have a cork mat under my computer

Jajana · 29/07/2022 21:51

I have some lovely Sara Miller wicker ones which I adore!

Marble is a good shout, look at John Lewis.

Elvira2000 · 29/07/2022 21:55

Phew! I thought were the only uncouth ones to use beer mats. We keep an eye out for interesting beer mats. They work great and have a relaxed vibe.

I’ve got silicone ones for outside which work well, ceramic for the bedroom (can be a bit sticky) and slate with a felt back for the table.
