Living room rug: under sofa or in front of sofa?

We have two sofas positioned L-shape and the space defined them is about 2m by 2.5m. We're having parquet floor installed and will need a rug.

Would you go for a bigger rug that tucks under both sofas, or a smaller one that leaves a gap all round?

Smaller with gap

No rug so you can see the beautiful flooring.

I was.going to say why get parquet if you want to completely cover it.....or are you wanting to protect the area where feet go?

Knittedfairies · 12/02/2022 10:30

I think I would buy a rug big enough to fit under the front feet of both sofas at least - I think it would tie them together and stop it looking bitty.

SmolCat · 12/02/2022 10:33

One that tucks. Rugs need to be ‘anchored’.
Floating rugs look shit.

And with a floating rug you’ll only see a small border of the floor anyway. Will there be other areas in the room where you can see the floor?

Or a smaller rug that tucks under just one of the sofas.

Agree no gap. We have this set up and I’ve tried both with different rugs. It works much better with no gap, more luxurious looking. Assuming you can see the floor round other edges of the room.

Also for the post who said no rug. Hard flooring is cold and hard under foot and and using a rug in tandem is much better.

Don’t know.
Jealous of your parquet floor, though Grin

Always a larger rug that tucks under both sofas 😄

Mumdiva99 · 12/02/2022 14:08

See personal taste....that top picture looks like the rug is the wrong size. It doesn't completely go under all the furniture....the bottom one looks more pleasing to my eye.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 12/02/2022 14:13

You need to ground the space. Either six inches smaller than the whole room, or as a minimum under the front legs of the furniture. Otherwise they look like a bath mat. Read Mad about the House on this (interiors blog) she’s v good.

Hmmmm. I agree that it is down to personal taste. I know that the fashion is to have rugs under front two legs of sofa but really it's bollocks in my opinion. I think what looks best depends on the room, the furniture and what you prefer.

Youcansaythatagainandagain · 12/02/2022 15:29

I prefer the front legs on the rug. I have a smaller rug and regret it. Due to the room being rectangle shaped, a larger rug didn’t fit the dimensions so our only option was a smaller rug.

For cost reasons I bought a smaller rug for another room and it looks silly. I must take it up really.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 12/02/2022 15:43

So that's a totally even split with a couple of write-in votes for no rug!

I'm erring on the side of rugs under sofas (they're not against the wall so there's an edge around the room and it will give a defined area. I do want a rug because 20yo sits on the floor a lot so need to be a bit cozy.

Rugs under the sofas, otherwise it's likely you will spend your life adjusting the fucker because it's moved.

cloudwine · 12/02/2022 17:27

Definitely agree that bigger is better, and anchoring them with furniture placed on top stops them from moving around too.

minipie · 12/02/2022 17:55

We have parquet with 2 sofas in a L and our rug goes under the front legs of one but not the other. More to do with the size of rug available than a style choice but it works pretty well. I would generally say under both sofas though.
