Can you talk to me about materials that wear well, are easy to maintain and don’t show dirt?

Can you please tell me about things in your home that have turned out to be particularly satisfactory - either because they’ve proved hard wearing, or they don’t show every speck of dirt, or need a lot of tlc.

I’ve made a lot of mistakes - the navy carpet and white dog wasn’t a great combination. I have a sofa with lots of cushions instead of a proper backrest that looked great in the showroom but always looks a bit dishevelled in my house, and a kitchen floor that always looks like it could do with a clean even when it’s freshly mopped.

I’m at the point now where I don’t want to change anything else because I don’t want to make more work for myself!

Karndean vinyl floor tiles. hide dirt (choice of colours) and hard wearing.

Oh I hear you @deeplyrooted on the navy carpet, it was beautiful on day one but what a nightmare to keep clean! I'm keen on a sisal effect replacement from unnatural flooring co.

@oldwhyno I have amtico which is similar in durability but sadly chose the wrong colour. And now it will take decades to wear out!

@indiesearcher sisal sounds lovely

Floorboards and rugs for warmth. Easy to hoover / mop, absorb the odd dink easily.

Granite worktops. Indestructible.

oldwhyno · 07/02/2022 10:07

@deeplyrooted I know your pain. We chose the right colour, then chose the wrong colour dog! Grin. Floor will easily outlive the dog though!

Matt white kitchen cupboards. Porcelain terrazzo tile floors Matt not shiny

Slate floor (old cottage), jute/hessian stair carpets and rugs.

Real wood floors. Sand and oil or repaint any dings or marks. Also if you cba the dings just add character.

Sisal is lovely but hard to clean IME if anything spilled

BasiliskStare · 09/02/2022 13:24

Sorry missed @indiesearcher's post if there is a sisal effect thing - which is easier to clean - that sounds good

An induction hob is very easy to clean (meaning I'm more likely to do it Grin) and very hard wearing against scratches.
We had the kitchen put in 4 years ago and it's starting to show some wear but the hob still looks shiny and new.

@ParadiseLaundry - I agree with you

OP induction hob so easy to clean - it will show some wear , mine is 8 or 9 years old but you can just get the glass bit replaced if it comes to it without having to replace all the gubbins ( technical term) which make it work. I got an induction hob against my better judgement ( I thought it looked like cooking on an iPad ) but so glad I did . Up until then I was Gas hobs all the way - this thing is just as responsive and Oh the cleaning is so much easier.

replaced cream carpets with a much less expensive one in tiny check off white and black up the stairs from John Lewis - it looks like a nice medium pale colour without being grey - how I wish I had done it before - it looks smart and so much easier to keep clean.

There is a fabric called Alcantara which I have for dining chairs - so easy to clean - As things need upholstering or I get new things I am getting everything done in this stuff - there are lots of colours.

One more - stainless steel worktops are so hardwearing and to my mind look better the more use. - easy to clean ( I have had granite , corian and wood before )

Well my tuppence's worth @deeplyrooted I am with you on easier to clean. I shall never have a shaker kitchen again because tiny corners - ha ha look great but harder to clean
