Do base coats make a difference? FnB

I've done some paint samples recently.

The Dulux ones look pretty much how I was expecting but not quite right,

the Farrow and Ball ones look so much darker and murkier than I was expecting. They are Inchyra Blue and Smoke Green.

The walls are currently off whiteish. Not sure what they are officially as we didn't do them.

I really thought the smoke green would look the best based on the Insta pics I have seen, but it looks dirty foresty.

is the base an issue for FnB?

I know light will be playing a part but the dulux ones look how you'd expect.

If you've used FnB did you do a specific shade base colour first?

Thanks so much

grey bases in differing shades

you need a platform for a dark pigmented paint to sit on. light walls for a lightish colour would be fine but dark colours really need a dark base

I found the f&b colours were much darker in real life than they appeared to be from photos or reels etc I’d see. In instagram or online. I don’t think it is the base, I think they’re just highly pigmented.

Thank you for replying

@GirlInACountrySong should I paint the walls grey first. I do have a grey tester pot I could try that with

I use F&B colours but get them mixed in valspar paint. The gold tin. Try your preferred F&B colours like that? B&Q mix them.
