Room dividers for children's room

Lostmyway86 · 24/01/2022 10:23

I'm hoping to split one of our bedrooms into two rooms for our 1 and 2 year old. I've seen these room dividers which are perfect but they're sold out everywhere www.diy.com/departments/karalis-cut-out-adjustable-height-room-divider/1012710_BQ.prd

Has anyone got any similar that they can recommend?

Thanks!

I'd use some of the ikea kallax units then they can double up as storage

To be honest with children that young, I wouldn't expect a divider like that to be up to the job and be very toppleable. If you can possibly find the space, I'd use something like a big Ikea Kallax, and split the 16 compartments so that 8 of them have inserts facing DC1's half of the room, and the other 8 facing into DC2's bit of the room.

I did something similar in my first ever flat, as it was just one room. It was really effective and felt more like a wall by using a bookcase than a thin divider would.

I would worry about them climbing up a kallax.

RedCandyApple · 24/01/2022 10:35

I wouldn’t do a kallax at that age unless you van secure it not sure how you would do that if it’s not against a wall? Kallax also take up much more space as they are quite big

Lostmyway86 · 24/01/2022 10:42

Thanks all, yes I preferred the ones on the link I shared as they could be secured to the ceiling. I wouldn't want anything they could climb or not secured to the ceiling until they were older. Seen some great ideas on Pinterest but can't seem to find any anywhere in shops.

I heard those ones in your link were discontinued (on a Facebook diy group) don’t know if that’s the case though

A friend did this with her children's rooms, it's clever and it works.

That's lovely.

A divider will just make the room feel tiny. It's pointless at those ages ..it's not like they need privacy!!!

indiesearcher · 24/01/2022 10:55

We did a kallax divider, it worked well, for a time. They were too young to need it to be very tall, it was more to mark out territory!

Lostmyway86 · 24/01/2022 11:06

@greenlunchbox it's a decent sized room so don't think it will feel tiny. They're currently in our old bedroom and husband put a wall up to make two small nurseries but my older step daughters need their own space now so are taking those rooms.

We'd really just like it more as a mark of own territory as pp said. Plus my eldest (2.5) will be moving out of cot in summer and out of nappies at night so expecting a few wake ups and just the rooms seperated slightly. With 4 kids (all girls) I just like the idea of each having their own space and area of calm in a crazy house! Probably more about me than them needing it but it's all worked well so far.

Hi OP, how about getting some quotes from a carpenter and replicating the panels? Other than that why not make them yourselves using MDF sheets and fixings or maybe sliding wardrobe doors...?

Lostmyway86 · 24/01/2022 15:03

@7catsisnotenough I think you're right, my DH is quite handy so I reckon he could do something similar. Just wondered if anyone had found something similar to save the effort but there just doesn't seem to be anything online.

Tbh I had looked for something similar for DHS (twins) and couldn't source anything so I was leaning towards making it myself. However having seen @JustJam4Tea 's post I'm now veering towards a major construction project 🤣

Have a look at the Elvarli range at Ikea. You could use the upright posts and then attach fabric to them with hooks. Like the sun sails you get for your garden but up and down. The posts attach to the ceiling and floor and are for wardrobes so must be pretty strong. The fabric would be taught so no risk to children (obviously need to see if it would work safely first).

parietal · 25/01/2022 23:19

as above, some version of Elvarli might work

You could try Jali: I think they make to order, so you could get a screen big enough to attach to the ceiling: www.jali.co.uk/product/fretwork

Was just coming on to say this precisely - DD (2 years old) is climbing everything and would absolutely try and scale that
