How often do you get a new kitchen.

My sister lives in a housing association house. They moved into the house when it was brand new 15 years ago and the kitchen still looks fine, but apparently they have to get a new kitchen fitted every 15 years (the HA pay)

I’ve just realised that we have always had old kitchens. We moved into our house 5 years ago and I think our kitchen must have been fitted in the early 90s by the looks of it. In our last 2 homes the kitchen seems to be from a similar time.

We can’t afford a new kitchen yet, much as we would love a new modern kitchen (but, it’s perfectly useable). But I was wondering how old everyone else’s kitchen is, and how often you replace it

We replaced a kitchen which was about 18-20 years old last year, it wasn’t new when we moved in and we’re not sure how old it was. It cost a fortune though so if in a decade we’re fed up with the colour or something we’ll have the doors sprayed or wrapped rather than replace the whole thing.

I think mine dates from about 1976.

A change is on the cards.

Ours is 19 years old and could have done with replacing at 15 years old (when we bought the property) but it’s limping on. We had other priorities and are saving so plan to do it next autumn. That’s a new build kitchen so probably wasn’t top spec. Whirlpool oven and hob are the originals. I hate the oven as I miss my old self cleaning one but want a different configuration in the new kitchen so can’t justify replacing it. It does cook stuff so that’s the main function.

Probably 20 years after going in.

I would rather move house

Porthia · 23/01/2022 12:53

I would think it’s approx 20 years depending on quality and how much use it gets (ie lots of people vs quiet household).

Personally we have put in 2 kitchens in the last 10 years but in different properties as we moved. In each case the kitchen we ripped out and replaced was 25+ years old and on its last legs! I would expect the one we put in 3 years ago to last another 15-20 years at least!

We replaced the kitchen in this house because we built a sunroom extension onto the end of the house and extended the kitchen by about 6 ft at the same time.
The kitchen needed doing anyway as it was a fairly new build house but the previous owners had split up before finishing it and he had no money left by the time he completed the interior, so it was just a few ad hoc units with a sink and free standing cooker.
We also changed the kitchen in our last house, again because we extended the kitchen.

Mine's 18 years old. Not in too bad condition but a couple of the doors are delaminating and it’s looking dated.

I can’t afford to replace it atm, it’s about 26 doors/ten drawers. Haven’t priced it up as I expect it to be £££££. I’ll either do it in a couple of years or move house depending on how my job changes.

It’s a big space and I could make it work a lot better with a different layout.

I live in public housing they just replaced my bathroom and the kitchens next I've been here 15 years

Kuachui · 23/01/2022 12:58

id say every 15- 20 years i would replace

Juanbablo · 23/01/2022 12:59

God knows how long ours has been here. We've lived here 4 years and it looks ancient. We rent so we aren't replacing it out of our own pocket and landlord won't.

StylishMummy · 23/01/2022 13:00

We're putting a kitchen in our extension at the moment and we've planned carefully to ensure it can last well over 20 years as DC grow and mature. Buy quality and it should last 2-3 decades easily

BiddyPop · 23/01/2022 13:05

Ours was just about 20 years old when we replaced it (we'd used it for 5 years once we bought the house), and although inconvenient, we made it work until we did a planned extension and replaced as part of those works.

16 years on, we have no plans to replace it. The only change has been extending the fridge space and cupboard above it when our old fridge died and we replaced it with an American-style fridge freezer. And changed the regular counter top to wooden counter top about 5 years ago.

My DGPs house had the same kitchen for 45 years, and then another 30 with the "new" kitchen which is still in very good nick.

babasaclover · 23/01/2022 13:19

We loved with our old terrible kitchen for 15 years and just recently replaced it - we waited cause knew we would extend when we could afford to - it must have been 30 + years old when we moved in.

I see them as a huge expense and would not replace this ever. Might have nee cupboard doors in around 10-15 years but structure wise no way.

Can't believe HA replace as a tick box exercise what a waste!!!!

lomoloko · 23/01/2022 13:31

The house I grew up in still has the same fitted units from 1910. They are glorious. If I could afford that quality I'd have one kitchen for life!

Weirdly, I happen to know each kitchen I have personally fitted is still in place. But I've moved each time, so put in three new kitchens in the last 20 years.

Norgie · 23/01/2022 13:34

I had a new kitchen put in when we extended the kitchen. It replaced the 25 year old one.
The thing that drove me mad was my DH complete lack of interest. I would show him pictures of kitchens and ask him what he thought, he would give his usual stock answer of ' it's ok, it's up to you ' Just the same as with everything else in the house.
What do you think of having the kitchen painted bright blue with pink spots and a green ceiling?
I don't mind, it's up to you. Grrrrr 🤬

Perhaps they follow the decent homes England standard.

How often do you get a new kitchen.
