Kitchen island hobs and downdraft extractor?

I'm at the early stages of my kitchen design. I like the idea of the hobs on the island but don't want a big extractor fan above it. Does anyone have a downdraft extractor? Do they work as well as over the head ones? We cook a lot so I don't want to get this wrong and end up with a smelly, steamy kitchen.

We have the Neff induction hob with Dow draft extractor on our island. It's amazing! My parents also have the same one and love it too. Bora are also really good.

Not a downdraft but I do have one of the flat panel ones that is flush with the ceiling. Works well

*downdraft

I ruled one out because:

  1. I'm a very messy cook and I can't even imagine how horrendous some of those crevices would be to clean.
  1. They use up a lot of space under the hob, so if you are limited for cupboard/drawer space make sure you've seen one in real life before you decide.

I also hate extractor fans... the noise drives me up the wall.

We have 4 massive velux with electric controls and automatic sensors instead. But suspect building control will have something to say at warrant sign off time.

Thanks for the advice and recommendations. I hadn't thought about difficulties cleaning it. I'll have a good look into it.

We have a Bora with built in extractor (not on an island though). Could not be simpler to clean it.

We couldn't get one big enough to extract the whole room on recirculation. My understanding is that you have to be reasonably careful on pot positioning and height of pots which would have put the kibosh on Mr. Shadows brewing habit.

I work in construction and we install these downdraft extractors to a few kitchens. They are not as efficient as normal extractors. They're a bit of a designer "fad"

Been looking at the Bora ones, they look amazing but I can't find any prices so quessing they are really expensive. Anyone have one? Even the basic ikea version was around £1400.

You're probably looking at around £2,500-£3,000 unfortunately

I have the ikea one in a large kitchen diner. Love it,very effective, easy to clean.

I have the bora x pure the steam is pulled down into the extract straight from the pan. It’s easy to clean and not too big in the drawer
Only down side o would say I’d fan can be noisy but that’s because I’m using it in a kitchen living room so notice it more
They’re pricy but i didn’t want a traditional extract as I’ve never found a recirculating one that works
The x pure which is the biggest with no zones as such is about £3k which is pricey but no further extract required
