Suggestions please on how I can update my old kitchen cupboard doors

My kitchen seriously needs updating. I’m going to paint the whole kitchen a new bright colour and add accessories but money is very limited as I’ve had to buy a new cooker a month ago.

My kitchen unit is white, think your basic flat pack (I’m sure, it was many years ago now) doors on units.

So I’m thinking it might be costly to replace doors (I’ve seen this) as I want to redecorate three other rooms.

I’ve seen sticky plastic wood effect patterns, maybe this is a quick and simple update, what are your thoughts?
And I can look for some nice handles.
Painting the doors maybe, but I’m worried they might not get an even finish.

All ideas truly welcome!
I’ve bought a few home magazines this weekend for inspiration.

This is what you need. Goes on any surface, minimum prep and loads of colours. The testers are 99p each so you can try them out easily.

I painted my kitchen units, and changed the handles, turned out really well.

MrsBean21 · 17/01/2022 21:42

Thank you @Maladicta, I love those colours but I’ve limited myself to buying 4 tester pots!

Yes @YoungA98 I think you are both right, painting is the way to go. That link you sent I loved some of those colours too and I’m sure once painted my cupboard will look fab!
I’ve been researching bits today and getting ideas down on a plan. Deciding to change my boring old kitchen table also, and hopefully fit a little armchair or small sofa for my old mum in the kitchen.

It’s been an exciting day for me.

Thank you for message @NameChange74567, that’s very encouraging for me to hear. I was worried about an even finish. But as I mentioned in previous posting painting is the way to go. I’ve seen so lovely handles today tooSmile

DIY on a budget Facebook group will give you lots of ideas.

Definitely paint the doors. I’ve done mine twice in the last 10 years.

Little Greene Paint Co - their Tom’s Oil paint is bombproof. No streaks and really easy to wipe clean. It might look expensive, but it goes a long way and is well worth it.

I've recently repainted our utility room doors and replaced the handles.

It's hard to narrow them down! Can highly recommend the paint though.

This is what ours looks like now with Chalk Green from Rustoleum and new handles from The Handle Studio

Thank you for photos @northernstars and @Maladicta. Both your kitchens look great! Wow! Painting does make a huge difference, now I see that.
I’m also looking at the other recommendations above thanks @Furries.

I hope I make a good job of it.
Thank you again everyone.

Good luck - it can seem a bit of a faff, but it’s worth it in the long run. You’re recycling rather than replacing, plus even a doofus like me managed to make it look good!

Might not apply to your style, but will add here anyway in case of use to anyone else. I live in an old cottage and have replaced a number of drawer/cupboard knobs vis a site called These Please - lots of pretty patterns snd colours!

Whatever you decide to do, hopefully you’ll come back with before/after photos. I love seeing what people have done without too much expense.

Furries · 19/01/2022 01:38

My kitchen isn’t finished yet (still got walls to do), but this is a rough idea of the change re painting just the units.

Again, LG Tom’s Oil paint really is bomb proof. Expensive for a tin, but the finish and easy maintenance is well worth it.

My worktop had a white marble effect. I covered it with sticky back plastic in a wood pattern. It looks much better but you have to he careful with it. It has gone green where I got oven cleaner on it and yellow from curry. It scratches easily and peels around the sink where water is. Saying all that, it still looks better than before.

Ooh northernstars what colour did you use ? It's gorgeous
Rodion · 19/01/2022 03:11

Do you have hinges that you can see from the outside when the cupboard is closed? I'm not convinced how much it matters but I did read recently that visible hinges on kitchen cupboards are very dating as all the new ones have hidden hinges. If you can be bothered to change them you can fill the old holes and install inner hinges quite cheaply.

Love the paint jobs shown upthread - proper transformations!

Has anyone painted gloss cupboards? I inherited them.
Or can the above paints be used on gloss?

Little Greene do an all-in-one primer/undercoat called ASP. Am pretty sure it can be used on just about any surface. It comes in the same range of colours as their paint.
northernstars · 19/01/2022 11:41

@Vicliz24 it's Milltown by B&Q. It was left over emulsion that we just used in the utility room. I'm not sure it would hold up in a properly used kitchen. They have a furniture paint the same colour or you could have it colour matched in a more suitable finish.

We have been using a shellac paint which you can put any paint over instead of sanding or undercoating. We're doing the whole house so it's definitely a time saver.

Yes!
I did mine using Frenchic paint and they are still perfect 2 years on. Minimal preparation needed - just light sand and clean with sugar soap and then I used a smooth roller to paint. Really easy and looks great.

MaryStuart · 19/01/2022 17:41

Oooh this is good to know.
Thank you @Furries and @Broskerempter

sunkendreams · 19/01/2022 17:50

Not that I've noticed, and I cross the patio daily in all weathers to get to the recycling bin - it is smooth but not exactly like a porcelain tile in a kitchen, of that makes sense? We went for a rustic finish though with little variations to the colour and texture. I've never seen any moss or that deadly invisible slime we used to get on the flagstones!

Apologies, wrong thread! Grin
