Space above fitted wardrobes

We have wardrobes the previous owner built along the length of the master bedroom (about 4.5m long). They're tall (2.5m tall) but we've got high ceilings (3.5m high) so there's a gap at the top. They cover the chimney breast.

Ideally we'd remove them and put in full height ones at each side of a restored chimney breast. We'd also need to redirect the coving as it currently follows the chimney breast line. This would be £££ and we've lots of other work that takes priority. We've lived with it for 8 years and want to do something at least medium term on it now.

We're thinking of leave the wardrobe as is and repaint it, changing the handles. What about about space above? Is there anything clever we can do with the space or will it look rubbish given the coving line?

We have a smaller gap, but our wardrobes just have a flat panel fitted along the length of the room, which hides the chimney breast and makes it look like a flat wall. The panel is curved to fit against the coving.

Your room has much better ceiling height though, so I’d use it for extra storage by getting some nice wicker hampers or vintage suitcases or something.

I had similar in my last house and put Ikea Branas rattan baskets along the top. They looked surprisingly good.

I agree with both posters - measure it and buy nice looking baskets / boxes and put them above the wardrobes - if you repaint the wardrobes with nice handles I reckon that will look good and lots of space for whatever you want to keep but not used daily
