Tips to make your home smell lovely

Any tips to make your house have a lovely smell when you walk in?
My house doesn’t stink but it doesn’t have the lovely clean fresh smell some houses have.
Two teen boys and pets don’t help that.
Nice diffuser recommendations? Bin scent liners? Just any tips beyond usual cleaning would be so welcome. I’m not keen on plug in air fresheners.

Opening windows as often as you can is the best way to make a home smell fresh. Perfumes, candles etc will temporarily and partially mask pet smells etc but it won't make it smell fresh.

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 02/01/2022 14:02

Open windows
I like the febreze small spaces for bathrooms
In the hallway I have a Reed diffuser, and I burn wax melts a lot or candles

HareOverThere · 02/01/2022 14:03

@LubaLuca thanks I don’t have the windows open often so that’s probably a good start. But it’s so cold!!

It's never too cold to open windows! I've drummed it in to my kids to open their bedroom windows when they wake up. Ours are open in every part of the house for at least a few minutes every day.

Of course keeping the house clean is the most important thing to keeping it smelling fresh, but airflow make everything much more pleasant thanb heavy perfumes etc.

jevoudrais · 02/01/2022 14:09

I second opening windows even for 5-10 mins in the mornings at this time of year. Mine have been open a few hours this morning as it's about 14 here!

madroid · 02/01/2022 14:09

Make sure its Clean. I found mold on some of the windows that created a really musty smell.

Vacuum and wash curtains/bedding/throws/cushion covers regularly.

Empty bins and keep pet paraphernalia outside.

Fresh flowers usually emit lovely smells.

DelphiniumBlue · 02/01/2022 14:10

I don't like chemical smells, but opening windows and having natural smells like pine cones , cloves in oranges, cinnamon sticks etc works for me.

loadofcrap10 · 02/01/2022 14:10

Open windows/back door where possible.
I know they aren't everyone's cup of tea but I have a Scentsy wax burner that can be left on for long periods, they do a few lovely fresh smelling waxes too.

Clean carpets, wash all soft furnishings and bedding, febreeze curtains and blinds.

Then reed diffusers in bathrooms and a steam electrical diffuser with nice essential oil blends in the hallway.

Roundlampshade · 02/01/2022 14:12

Cut a lemon into slices in a bowl and pour on hot water.

How clean is your oven? That can emit dirty greasy smells even when it isn’t turned on.

All you need is lemon juice nd bicarbonate of soda. Google the household tips.

Lovinglife45 · 02/01/2022 14:17

Open all windows in the morning regardless of how cold it is. Nothing else comes close.

Air fresheners, diffusers, scents only mask smells.

Cocoabutterformula · 02/01/2022 14:18

All of the above!

Clarice99 · 02/01/2022 14:20

In addition to all of the above, make sure you vacuum regularly as dust smells horrible/stale.

TheVolturi · 02/01/2022 14:23

I don't use any type of scented air freshener or candles at all as they give me migraine. I open windows every day and change bedding regularly and wash all cushions /throws etc. Dog is bathed at least once a week as well so he never has the doggy stink either. All floors are solid downstairs as well which I think really helps.

Motnight · 02/01/2022 14:23

You must open windows!! Our house would stink if we kept the windows shut!

Pegasussnail · 02/01/2022 14:28

Opening windows

Also washing- eg cushion covers (regularly)
We have tiled floors that I wash rather than carpets. I burn essential oils eg citronella

Wildrobin · 02/01/2022 14:29

A friend of mine never airs her house and I really struggle as no matter what else you do it’s just never fresh .
I air ours at least once a day and also use Method floor cleaner which smells really nice

mobear · 02/01/2022 14:37

I agree with opening windows. I also spray Diptyque Room Spray around the front door and living room when we’re expecting guests.

HareOverThere · 02/01/2022 14:52

Opening windows seems the best thing then thanks, I’ll accept the cold and start doing that a lot more. Will also do a deep oven clean.
I’ve mostly got wooden floors but what about rugs? Shake and vac type stuff?

-Make sure your oven is clean
-Clean your cooker hood filters regularly
-Soda crystals and hot water down plug holes regularly - drop of essential oil added is lovely
-teenage boys to Strip and change own bedding regularly
-Bedroom windows open for 5 mins every morning
-Wash cushion covers/ throws etc.

  • essential oil diffuser (muji ones are great) fresh scents like eucalyptus, peppermint, mandarin, lemongrass
Luredbyapomegranate · 02/01/2022 14:55

Open windows, twice a day ideally.

Make sure it’s clean - pets mean lots of vacuuming of soft furniture and carpets, and cleaning around feeding bowls and Ditto be strict about wet towels and and boy socks going straight in a laundry bin with w lid, and daily showers.

Scents are useful, but the cheap ones are yucky. Plants with a nice scent are one option, otherwise diffusers will be most effective and cost effective.

Bunce1 · 02/01/2022 14:59

Shake your rugs out and hang them outside every now again. I vacuum as normal but every now and again I shake on bicarb and some lavender essential oil then I vacuum it up.

Wash cushion covers and throws (if you have them) regularly.

Open windows.

I have a steam mop, and I put a couple of drops of essential oil in there too. Makes the house fresh.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 02/01/2022 15:08

Open windows
Hoover, mop and dust regularly.
I use vanish foam on rugs once a week.
Fresh flowers.
Small herb pots in kitchen.

jazzandh · 02/01/2022 15:15

make sure the filters in your hoover are clean and fresh as well.

HareOverThere · 02/01/2022 15:21

Love this, I’m making a list. I do clean but need to get into a routine of doing these extra things regularly. Going to look at steam mops!
