Has anyone had a stained glass window fitted?

We live in a 30s house-many of which along the road have gorgeous stained glass windows on the side of the house on the landing of the stairs. We don’t-there is a crappy metal-framed bobbly window pane there that is horrible!

We’d like to replace it with a stained glass panel but have no idea where/how to go about it and what it would cost?! I’m sure if I found a specialist, I would be offered the chance to design one myself for a huge fee but I am talentless and sure I couldn’t afford that! Is there a cheaper way? Can you buy panels off the peg? I presume they aren’t double glazed-or could they be? Would the glass maker fit them?? Are we looking hundreds or thousands!?

Has anyone done this or know anyone that has?

We had one put in our loft extension side window, I designed it and it was £125 more than the cost of a plain obscured window that was in the builder's budget. It's a modern take on a 1930s design, pretty simple. The local glazier that we used has plenty 1930s designs themselves as it's an almost totally 1930s area

I got a local person (not a company) to make one - an exact copy of a friends door who had a house the same age/style but lived in a different town so didnt mind my copying. Your neighbours may be flattered if you ask to copy.

Cost a few hundred pounds and we fitted it (replaced the 60s glass in the original victorian wooden door). Totally transformed the house from in and out and worth paying far more for a great feature.

There is likely to be a small stained glass company near you...either that is an artist or that makes for doors and windows. Find out how much for your particular window then go from there.

We replaced our 1930's side panel, and 6 panes in the front door about 10 years ago to our own design. Cost about £700 back then. Bloody love it!

We have existing 1930s stained glass to the front bedroom, lounge and door. It's beautiful...hideously bad at insulating, but there you go! When converting the garage to a study we found a local company to replicate the design in modern double glazing, it doesn't have quite the same wobbly charm, but certainly holds the heat a lot better! I do have some cracked panes in the original windows though, and I'm slightly at a loss on how to find someone how can repair this using traditional methods so it matches the rest of the old textured/ coloured glass.

@AltheaVesr1t there are firms around who will incorporate the existing glass in-between the panes of a new double glazed glass unit after restoring it, there's certainly one in the Greater Manchester area but I can't for the life of me remember what they're called

Thanks @Svalberg, I will look into that!

Aw my late DM was a stained glass artist. I'm about to start learning myself. You need to find someone who can do a really smooth job on the leading - it looks horrible if it's bumpy and rough.

I think we used this company. They secondary glazed a window, and copied it for 3 new windows. Not cheap but absolutely worth it, made a new extension feel part of the house
