We need to freshen our kitchen up but can't afford a complete refit. I've found come companies who spray paint , but do you think I could paint it myself instead ?

The cupboards don't have a pattern. Just plain doors, seem to be MDF with laminate over the top. Will it look naff?

Painted ours with Frenchic alfresco after a friend did hers and raved about it. She said hers hasn’t chipped or cracked and looks brilliant.

Not sure how the spray ones hold up but my Frenchic has scuffed in a couple of places with heavy handed DH. It has touched up easily enough to be fair, and looks miles better than it did before, certainly cheap enough with not even a whole tin used. I can’t afford a new kitchen so will touch it up as needed for the next couple of years

I think the spray people quoted £50 per cupboard-which was bonkers, I could get a new cupboard and door for less than that! You would have to really love your kitchen quality and layout to go down that route.

Could you remove the laminate and paint what’s underneath?

You may be able to buy some new doors cheaply if the base units are ok. You can just buy the doors from places like b&q.

Thank you. Today's job will be a trip to b and q to look at cupboard doors.

If you are on Facebook look at the frenchic page there are loads of people who do it.
I used it on my lounge cupboards and then wilko matt varnish over the top and they look great.

I did my bathroom tiles with frenchic alfresco.
Only a couple of tiny chips in 2 years and can easily be touched up.
Just make sure you sand well and leave to cure between coats.
There are usually good sales on doors in B&Q though.

I've painted my kitchen cupboard doors with farrow and ball paint.

They were also mdf doors under laminate so I just stripped the laminate off and painted the door.

Worked well looks loads better than it did and didn't cost a lot either.

Painting a full kitchen load of doors and drawer fronts is a huge amount of work.
I have used Frenchic Alfresco on furniture all over the house; the bedroom, hallway, living and dining room pieces have endured but the kitchen doors have not fared so well, especially those where we stand and prep.

I've found some doors I like from B and Q. It's going to come in as £700 for the kitchen which isn't bad. I think.

The only problem is the side of the units will be the current fake wood, but the fronts will be light floss grey. What do you do about the sides ? Paint them?

You will be able to get side panels at B&Q but might be an issue depending on if you have an overhang on your worktops or not. Otherwise just paint.

None of my doors were standard sizes so I had no option but to paint. £700 for a new kitchen look is pretty good.

Ours is sprayed (was done before we bought the house) and the quality no the finish is astonishingly good.

I’ve painted my wooden cabinets/doors twice in the past 9 years. Both times have used a Little Green Tom’s Oil paint.

The depth of colour is great. The paint is bomb-proof - no scratches or nicks. Very easy to wipe clean. Probably cost around £150 in paint each time. It’s a really easy way to change up the look of your kitchen.
