Porcelain floor tiles?

Looking for some input on whether to go for porcelain floor tiles in our kitchen - has anyone any experience, good or bad? We have a large-ish extension with kitchen/diner/seating area. Currently the kitchen section is tiled and the rest has floorboards that flow through the rest of the house. The floorboards got damaged so they have to come up (just in the kitchen, rest of house is fine). Debating whether glossy porcelain tiles might be a good alternative, we have 2 kids and 2 dogs so we need something durable! Will the gloss show up every muddy paw print? Also will it be cold underfoot? Thanks for any insight!

We have porcelain floor tiles in kitchen and garden room, I don’t think think ours are glossy though, light coloured. Had them put in 11 years ago.

We love them, tough, durable, steam clean with a Karcher mop, takes 10 mins and floor is perfect. They are cold underfoot (we don’t have underfloor heating) but I like that as our house is in SE and is a warm house.

We also have a stone floor (hallway) and it’s much harder to keep clean.

Let me know if a photo of tiles would help.

We have almost finished our kitchen extension and have light grey matt porcelain tiles. They will be also used for our patio which the room opens onto. We have water underfloor heating so they are lovely to walk on and really easy to clean but do show every crumb etc.

Less grey colour, more warm cream in real life.

Thanks all, they look great, I’m very tempted to go for it.

I've had porcelain put down this year and they are bloody freezing. I really wish I'd have thought to put underfloor heating in first.

We have porcelain wood-effect tiles with underfloor heating in our kitchen/diner/family room. They're lovely - incredibly robust, look nice, textured so not slippy and don't show everyday marks. Also warm obviously.

They're bloody freezing underfoot... not glossy, I imagine you just wouldn't want to get them wet when there are people/dogs to go sliding around? Largeish extension here too so underfloor heating would cost a fair bit. We're taking them out when we redo the kitchen and will consider lvt instead, because it is just so cold.

We have them but with UFH (10mm tiles inside, 20mm tiles outside). But not the shiny sort.

I have always put in porcelain tiles in every house I have owned. They are tough and easy to clean. But I advise to avoid the glossy sort as they show every mark and it’s hard to get them smear free when cleaning. Go for Matt stone effect with some colour variation as they don’t show the dirt at all!

DrNo007 · 27/12/2021 22:47

Forgot to say, glossy tiles are slippery so go for a slight texture if you don’t want to be falling over regularly.

Cuppatea14 · 27/12/2021 23:07

Hmmm thanks for the reality check, the slippy and cold thing is definitely the big consideration. I love the look of the gloss ones but maybe not very practical. Don’t think the budget will stretch to UFH sadly. Just so very bored of wood!!

@stalkersaga what colour is your grout please? We have porcelain wood tiles in kitchen and the light beige grout is minging and won't come clean. I'm going to have to colour it

Very dark, almost black. It looks fine. The floor's been down for 4 years.
