New house new start

I'm just about to move into a new house, I'm going to decorate before moving in and it has to have new flooring throughout.
I have a 6 year old and 14 year old and a lab.
I was thinking grey carpets throughout except the hall, dinning room and bathrooms and kitchen which I was thinking grey vinyl (the dog slips on everything else).

But now I'm thinking grey is dated - I'm thinking a more natural colour - beige/ cream type colour.

The walls will be all white. Most of my furniture is grey with wood tops- dinning table, coffee table etc.

Thought?

Take cover OP! The hate for grey is strong on MN.

I don’t mind it simply because it means I don’t need to think about things too much.

I would probably go for an off white rather than grey if I was decorating right now and staying away from colour.

Oh dear Confused

I wasn't sure if I was being crazy going beige or cream. Would mean I'd go with wood effect vinyl.

I've just had beiges for years and fancied a change as this will find be me choice - I'm moving out of rented.

Ooooh we could be new house chums. I am going to do lots of colour in mine as I'm sick of boring rented walls!

I think the all grey trend is a bit boring, and not particularly suited for dull grey British winters. But using grey as a neutral in other schemes is absolutely fine (and what most people still do, looking at the available flooring out there).

You can also get warmer greige carpets, that look beige in some lights and grey in others. A warm grey or cool beige if you like

Grey has definitely had its moment in interior design terms. Lots of other choices though. We’ve nearly finished a renovation and my colour palette is off white, putty (beige/taupe/mushroom) and an almost black navy. I’ve also seen lots of very dark green, moss green, terracotta and blush pink still.

Yes I thought grey would become very old very quickly.

As I'm laying new flooring throughout I don't want it looking old quickly.

I like the taupe and mushroom suggestions. They would also hide the dog hair.

If you do add any grey just make sure it’s more of a griege (warm toned) than a blue based grey (cool toned). Then you can still scatter odd bits through.

Grey is very dated now. You'll regret it. You'd be better off with polished wood floors and rugs. Or beige carpet. If you like grey, you could go for greige. For the kitchen, not grey vinyl but maybe charcoal?

Beige isn't much better than grey - do you remember all those hideous beige bathrooms. Too much of anything is a bit sickly. We've bought a second home that will need to be furnished from scratch - not sure where to start - some people suggested buying the sofa first, some suggested a favorite object, while others have suggested starting with a rug. Luckily the floors are engineered wood and painted floorboards. Whatever you buy do try it out beforehand for stains and dusk flecks - it sounds like you need something practical - dirty never looks good.
