(Budding )Interior designers: What wall tiles would improve this kitchen?

We recently painted our kitchen units and had the walls re-tiled (see photo) but just don't like the new tiles :-(
We am prepared to have the walls re-tiled in the new year as we need to live with this kitchen for a long time so want to be happy with it. Having got our tile choice wrong once we are keen not to make the same mistake again! Have made numerous trips to various tile shops but just not confident to make a choice now so if you could assist us we would be forever grateful - thank you.

So difficult to help as the units look grey and the worktops brown which is an unusual choice.
What colours are in the rest of the kitchen?
Agree you need to see examples that coordinate with both colours and get some samples and live with them until you are sure.
The current tiles are too pretty so maybe choose something more natural like a stone effect containing both colours. Best of luck.

This is the worktop (it's black & brown with some cream in).
Thank you for your help.

Probably not what you want to hear but I think its the unit colour which is off rather than the tiles.
I think a dark blue/grey like Railings would work better here with the worktop and your new, very nice tiles.

Bimblybomeyelash · 02/12/2021 12:52

I think it’s the worktop that’s the problem.

SheWoreYellow · 02/12/2021 12:53

Is the worktop expensive? I presume you’ve considered changing it, not the tiles?

The colours of the tiles aren’t right with the workout are they? Im not sure what would look better though.

Birdsnesting · 02/12/2021 13:03

I think that apart from anything else, I would choose plain coloured tiles - ie all the same colour because the multi-coloured effect clashes with the swirling pattern of the worktop. It looks like pairing stripes with dots, it looks too jumbled. The general greys and browns do look a bit drab, though I think it needs colour, in the tiles if you're happy with the colour of the cupboards.

I'm painting our place at the moment, and experimenting with strong colours like Inchyra Blue.

Tiles look great.
Maybe change your worktop to a lighter colour? Mine is a white marble effect stone worktop. Also, you could repair the doors on the kitchen units?

Repaint not repair. Sorry!
I painted the unit doors in the utility a bubblegum pink as I felt that the utility looked very boring. I have lots of bold colours and big artwork in my house and I know it's not to everyone's taste. Smile

It’s a warm coloured worktop with cool coloured tiles and units. What colour are the walls?

I’d consider changing worktop rather then everything else, otherwise paint units and swap tiles for a single warmer colour

RubyTuesday70 · 02/12/2021 14:53

Change the worktop, the tiles and cupboards are fine.

You're going to really struggle to match anything to it, being brutal. And it will probably be cheaper to do this than knocking all the tiles off and replacing them. You need a simple beech effect or something a lot paler like white/marble effect.

LagerthaofKattegat · 02/12/2021 14:56

Do you absolutely need tiles?

I’ve just got a stainless steel splash back behind cooker hobs. And then use kitchen/bathroom wipeable paint for walls. Behind sink is windowsill which is wood.

Personally don’t like tiles everywhere! It’s not like you throw water around the place.

ODFOgrinch · 02/12/2021 15:04

Are the units beige/ivory or grey?

The pink/blue/green glass is very cooling.
The worktop is a hot swirl
The colour of the units needs to go with one or the other and doesn't seem to at the moment.
Individually all elements are nice( ( though I think the worktop is the most dated). Which elements do you like best?

ByLws · 02/12/2021 16:03

Replace the worktop with a paler wooden block style and it will all tie in!

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 02/12/2021 17:01

The problem is that the new tiles (which are lovely) clash with the worktop. The units in the grey are lovely.

The tiles and the units are a cool tone and the worktop is a warm tone, so they don't work together.

Have you considered changing your worktop? Maybe a white or grey flecked quartz?

17to35 · 02/12/2021 19:29

What is the actual colour of the cabinetry?
I think the new tiles will be one colour and possibly Matt or satin rather than gloss.
Neither the style or the colour of the tiles go with the worktop or cabinets.

midnightmoon8 · 03/12/2021 13:36

I cannot tell you how grateful I am to you all for your replies! Thank you so much. It honestly hadn't crossed to mind to change the worktop but I think I will just do that.

For those who were asking: the units are painted grey and I do quite like the colour of them & they match ok with the wall tiles.
You are right, it's the worktop which clashes so I will get some samples. It seems a lot simpler to change the worktop rather than tiles.
Many thanks you lovely lot :-)

This colour / style worktop would work well OP

I agree that a wooden worktop would look so much more in keeping with your units and new tiles.
IKEA has a good range or wood/part wood or look at W Express
