Is Grey totally done now?

I know it was popular and now a bit of colour is more popular, but I am Scandinavian and it has always been my go to. I am decorating a buy-to-let and wondering if I should avoid my go-to grey and white. It's so easy as I even know the paint numbers I like off by heart!!!

Oh god I hope so.

pizzaobsessed · 21/11/2021 18:53

I think grey and white is still quite popular for rentals

WillThisUsernameDo · 21/11/2021 18:54

I’m sure they’re fine if you’re just wanting to let it out as it’s pretty neutral and is good at making a room look bigger. It’s depressing as hell though.

Pixxie7 · 21/11/2021 19:08

I expect so because it encourages people to buy new, on a personal level I love grey and white so if you like it go for it.

JammyRedRooo · 21/11/2021 19:11

Grey is still a good neutral. If you choose the right shade for the room size/orientation it can look lovely with pops of colour coming from elsewhere. But I think the grey aesthetic where the walls, carpet, sofa etc are all grey is well and truly done.

Aquamarine1029 · 21/11/2021 19:13

If you love it that's all that matters.

FawnFrenchieMum · 21/11/2021 19:15

I’d definitely use it for a rental. Leaves it very open to the renters to use their furniture and soft furnishing to colours of their choice.

I’d much prefer grey / white to magnolia!

SplodgeWaddler · 28/11/2021 13:43

My old bedroom is grey. I’ve now swapped rooms and my two teenage daughters are sharing my old room. Whereas i mainly had light brown wooden furniture, they mainly have white IKEA stuff - it’s so lovely with the white.

FredaFox · 28/11/2021 13:45

Agree much prefer grey to magnolia
You can still add your own colour accents as it's a neutral

Going by the shops, grey might not be the height of sophistication now but it's still everywhere (along with crushed velvet and glitter wallpaper which I find way more an eyesore than a plain grey wall)

MagentaRocks · 28/11/2021 13:46

I like grey, as you can add colour to it and change it if you want something different. If it’s what you want to do then do it. I don’t understand the hate for grey, different people like different things. If you wanted red or pink that would be ok too.

olivehater · 28/11/2021 13:55

I think a bit of grey is ok still. To be in the safe side if I was buying a new carpet I would go for greige/browny grey/minky colour. You can block up either the grey or the brown in the rest of decor.
I have a grey sofa and redecorating. Not getting rid of it but won’t be putting grey on the walls this time. Maybe colour instead.

DramaAlpaca · 28/11/2021 13:58

I like grey, it's clean and neutral and easy to brighten up with other colours.

I think white and grey would be perfect in a rental for that reason.

Classica · 28/11/2021 13:59

I think what you're planning sounds like a good neutral colour scheme for a rental property. I think the 'grey walls, grey sofa, grey rug, grey bloody everything' aesthetic is on the wane though.

Is Grey totally done now?
GetTheFlockOutOfHere · 28/11/2021 13:59

I hope so, it's minging, IMO, and it always had been IMO.

Dull drab colour for dull drab homes. No idea how it was ever a thing tbh. I wouldn't have it ANYwhere in my home. Never have, never will.

Christmasbutmakeitspooky · 29/11/2021 14:52

You could go for warm grey rather than cool grey. Like ‘greige’.

Pontypandytaxpayer · 29/11/2021 14:56

It makes sense in an unfurnished rental as everything goes with it.

nannybeach · 29/11/2021 15:05

I love grey. You have to have a neutral "base". I don't follow it copy "trends" far too old. I seem to start them. 15 years ago,we had red sofas, got fed up with brown and beige. Walls were cream beige,1930s cottage. When I fancied a change 5 years down the line, all the wallpapers were cream beige with a touch of red. I wanted everywhere white, walls I mean. DH didn't so compromise, bedrooms, bathroom white. Hall, lounge grey. This was 8 years ago, never saw anyone else with it. Our lounge is south facing and obviously very sunny. I add coloured throws accessories, depending on the time of year. Beige always makes me think of rentals

TuftyMarmoset · 29/11/2021 19:18

Maybe ok for carpet in a rental but don't paint the walls grey. It's so depressing and can put people off. Go for white or off-white.

cheeseismydownfall · 29/11/2021 19:32

Grey would definitely put me off a rental. And I don't agree at all that it goes with everything. And it's nonsense to say "at least it is better than magnolia", as if those are literally the only two permissable options.

Personally I would much prefer a soft, warm neutral - think stone etc.

FlickerBeat · 29/11/2021 19:35

I hope so!

I'd be put off a rental that was decorated in grey.

White or magnolia is better.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 29/11/2021 20:52

Yes it definitely has had its day, thankfully.

As for the rental, I suppose it depends on your market? If it's students then it's probably ok.

octopuseyes · 29/11/2021 20:57

That look has been around a while, but as one poster said it’s the type of grey- cold flat greys are a no. White always looks fresh and clean 😊

Tumbleweed101 · 30/11/2021 08:07

I would do white, looks clean and fresh to start and if you get reliable tenants maybe they can then decorate how they want and white is cheap to re decorate with if you want them to paint over when they leave.

Fatherfintanstack · 30/11/2021 08:11

I'd go for white for a rental especially if part or unfurnished. I think people would prefer this as it goes with anything and they'll be bringing their own bedding etc at least. Also easier to patch up. Brilliant white will always be available but the shades of grey for sale might change.

ILoveShula · 30/11/2021 12:50

Magnolia is vile.
Grey is dreary
I have white everywhere
