We're moving into a large, 3 year old house. It's soul-less. It's currently done in various shades of grey/silver/taupe with a bit of the obligatory teal in the sitting room. A friend of mine said it's a bit 'footballers' wives' (it wouldn't be a premier league footballer, it's not that fancy!).

I've always lived in tatty, rural, older homes. I like cosy, colourful, interesting, lived in, welcoming decor. I've no idea how to make that work here! I'm actually feeling a little unsure of the property as it's so 'not me'. Could you hit me with ideas or images of how to keep it nice but make it feel more homely please?

If it is a new build by one of the main building companies and you know the name of the house style then definitely search for it by its name on Instagram. There are lots of people showing how they've done their identical houses using the hashtags of the builders and house styles, gives you loads of ideas and some of them are amazing!

Which way do the main rooms face, and what size are they? I'm renovating a very different kind of house (Victorian) at the moment, but, having usually been someone who painted everything warm white, I'm experimenting with colours, and using quite strong colours.

Oh both fantastic posts thank you! I'll find out the name of it.

Sitting room, kitchen and garden are NE facing. Master bedroom is SW.

I am buying a 6 year old property and also am looking to build in some character to it. I also like cosy lived in homes. I am going to experiment with colour so I agree with the previous poster on this. I am going to put in a more characterful herringbone wooden floor which I think can work for old and new. I am going to build in bookcases etc to add character. I also intend on mixing my furniture between old and new. I think all of these things will help make it look more cosy. Modern county or modern farmhouse is what I am going for.

This is theoretically an article about Farrow and Ball paint, but I thought it had some useful guidelines about room aspect, light, the time of day you're using the room most, and whether it's likely to be used most often in daylight or artificial light, regardless of what paint you're using:

www.houseandgarden.co.uk/gallery/farrow-and-ball-colours

In general, once you've identified a paint colour you are considering, it's useful to google, 'Real homes/rooms painted in X', as I never think you can tell anything from little paint slabs, and I've certainly had a few shocks in the past where the same shade of paint that I used in an old house looks completely different in the new one because the aspect of the room is different.

I'm also ruthless about getting lots of testers.

Some great tips. I need to be patient I think, not dive in with paint. Live in it for a while (though the teal sitting room can do one, it looks dated and dark). That insta is good, I don't do insta but guess I need to start!
