It'll be just me and DH for Christmas this year, but I still intend doing lunch with all the trimmings.. Problem is I can't think of a way to dress the table nicely without it looking empty and awkward. Our light oak dining table is six foot x two foot six (180x75cms) with six chairs. Ideas please if you have time!

I tend to think that a beautiful tablecloth or runner, coupled with a dramatic floral centrepiece and candles in proper candlesticks/candelabra looks gorgeous.

Something like this could be placed partway along your table, reducing the overall "length" of that makes sense and giving a sense of luxury:

Will you placing serving dishes on the table, or in the kitchen / sideboard?

Also forgot to mention that for DH and I we tend to go all out with the best china service, cutlery, wine holder, napkin rings etc so it feels more luxurious (as opposed to our everyday meals!).

Get some old fashioned tea cups and so on.

It's just me and my two teens, and the end of the table not being used I put a floral and candle arrangement. I don't put anything down the centre as we need that space for the food, but I either use seasonal placemats or a tablecloth. Crackers and pretty napkins also make it feels festive.

It sounds like a lovely table actually. Remove the other chairs, and if possible have a lovely table cloth. I have a length of inexpensive red fabric that I got years ago, and it comes out every year to do a stellar job. Some day I will hem it!

In any case lay your settings for two deciding on formal or informal. Bottle of wine (if having) in coaster, candles in candlestick and a few lower ones, bottle/jugs of water, center piece, sparkling glasses, shined up cutlery etc. I light candles even if we eat in daylight because why not? Don't forget a cracker on the plates!

Rather that plate everything in the kitchen bring serving bowls to the table.

Fill the rest of the table with deserts, cheeses and fruits, your mince pies, shiny red apples piled high, a bowl of clementines, a few chocolates on a plate, small trifle etc. All of their colours and textures will bring real warmth and abundance to the table. We always have a pudding to flame, it is fun and is a once a year event!.

Don't forget your lighting - nothing too harsh over head.

There is a fun show on Netflix called Lords and Ladles. It is set in Ireland. They have a few chefs who go to various castles to cook a menu, usually from about 100 + years ago. It can be quite funny actualy but there are many interesting serving methods that you can use for your Christmas Day lunch, even if (like me) you do not live in a castle. I bet it will be lovely!

I'd go for a runner down the middle. Group candles and a floral decoration at one end. Lay the food out in beautiful dishes at the other end. Put your place settings in the middle with napkins in rings and christmas crackers. You can easily fill the table.

Sit it the middle, facing each other, and get rid of the rest of the chairs.

Nice tablecloth, candles, some little vases with eucalyptus.

Maybe buy just two of some really nice glasses.

Have a lovely day.
