Making dated rustic style bed work?

I’ve inherited this bed frame from my parents and will be moving it in to my first home soon. I don’t love it but I’ve poured all my money into the house and it is a great quality bed (plus I don’t want to hurt their feelings!) so I’m determined to make it work for now.

However, it is almost impossible to find any furniture with a matching finish in 2021, and besides, it is not my style at all! The house is very modern and I would like a pink, black and white modern theme in the room (inspiration pic attached). I’m not going to make the bedroom look like a farmhouse around this bed because it doesn’t match the property at all. How do I get this bed to tie in with the rest of the room? Can anyone suggest a bedside table that would tie the two themes together? Thanks!

It’s just pine wood by the looks of it, you can easily paint that whatever colour you like using wooden furniture paint

It's only the orange knotty-ness of it that's a problem. Just paint it.

SophiesMummySaid · 02/11/2021 17:06

Paint it black?

Quickchangeartiste · 02/11/2021 17:09

Paint it - Annabelle Duke paint is good, or Rustoleum furniture paint.
Give it a good wash with sugar soap or diluted vinegar to get rid on any polish or oils.

Paint it white, or pink, or black, or all three Smile
It'll look fab.

RosieRoww · 02/11/2021 17:11

Hm, you can either paint it over, but bear in mind that it's time consuming work or change just the headboard?

peachgreen · 02/11/2021 17:11

Just paint it black, it'll be grand. The style will be fine with what you're looking to go for.

Yes, I agree, it's very straightforward to paint it. I have used various kinds of paint and have found chalk paint, although the easier option, to be the least hard wearing.

My method is an undercoat of Zinsser primer (brilliant stuff and dries in minutes) followed by two coats of a good quality spirit-based eggshell paint of your choice. I have used F&B and Little Greene and I always apply it with a tiny roller for a professional finish.

Yeah, slap some paint on that thing. It's always a good deed to cover up orangey pine.

Agree with the others, it will be able to paint if you prepare the wood properly and use the right materials. I'd go for white rather than black, if only because if you change your mind about which colour is better it's easier to go from white to black than black to white. Choose bedside tables that compliment your chosen look rather than ones that match the bed. Good luck creating your new bedroom!

Thanks everyone- I wanted to avoid painting because nightmare Grin but I think it will be worth it in the end!

Spray paint it if you have an outdoor space and want to speed up the process! I’d go black too considering the colour scheme you want and you’ll be free to either match a bedside table in black or have a nicer one in the wood similar to inspiration pic.

Use Frenchic if you don't want it to smell. 3 or 4 thin coats, 2 hours apart

Bimblybomeyelash · 04/11/2021 20:10

It’s a simple clean unfussy shape, so once painted will look great.

pickingdaisies · 19/11/2021 21:21

Seconding frenchic paint. Goes on easily, standard chalk paint which will need waxing or there is a finish for indoor/outdoor furniture which should be tougher.

pickingdaisies · 19/11/2021 22:05

And if you use some form of chalk paint, clean the frame with dilute sugar soap, than rinse off and dry. You won't need primer. Zinsser is good stuff, but the fumes are nasty.
