Fabric headboards

Do fabric headboards wear quickly?

DS needs a new bed frame.

We've had a wooden one for about 15 years and it's still going strong - feels like it will last us a lifetime really.

I quite like this fabric one but worried that it will stain and wear easily and quickly: www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-grace-upholstered-bed-frame-double/p3827108

What have your experiences been?

Other than strands of DD’s long hair getting stuck to hers (easily removed) ours are fine, they must be 5 years old and can’t say I’ve noticed any issues. They are also John Lewis but a different style.

Have you thought about buying a bed base and then buying a headboard separately? We have fabric headboards and haven't noticed any wear, but when we purchased a new King size bed a few years ago and I couldn't find one I liked, I bought the base and then I actually made the headboard (I'm quite crafty). We're actually thinking of changing the decor in the room and I'm going to re-upholster the headboard.

If you bought the headboard separately, if it did wear or was stained, you could just replace than rather than the whole bed.

Africa2go, was it difficult making your own headboard? What did you use for the base and fabric? Any advice or videos you researched beforehand? Thank you in advance, I am very impressed😊

I don't have anything against them really, but I always think they'll gather more dust than wooden/ metal ones.

@Teaandsugar - I used a piece of MDF for the shape, you can get the foam and wadding from places like Dunelm / Hobby craft etc or on line, the fabric button kits if you want a buttoned headboard, and then any fabric you like. Need adhesive / staple gun etc (and lots of patience!). I think upholstered headboards look much more luxurious than metal or wood and are much more comfortable if you want to sit up in bed. Lots of youbtube videos etc.

I’ve made a headboard too. It’s really easy. I’m quite crafty, though, and like doing this sort of stuff.

Made mine with MDF, polyester wadding and a fabulous Angie Lewin upholstery fabric, Dandelion Two in ochre. I had to do two seams (for symmetry) to get the width. Only tool was a heavyweight staple gun. DH hung it straight onto the wall with a French cleat. I sprayed it with Scotchgard and it's like new after 4 years, or is it 5? I just vacuum it with the soft brush attachment.

So easy to do your own and have something unique. I did a Roman blind and big drum lampshade in the same fabric and I still love it every time I walk in.
