Curtains drop is 86inch, should I buy 90" drop?

ForeverQuery · 06/10/2021 22:32

Daft question I know but I hate curtains that are not long enough, but my new house has a drop of 86", would 90" curtains look silly if they are resting on the floor?

Hope that makes sense Grin

A drop of 86" from where? How are they hung?

ForeverQuery · 06/10/2021 22:36

From curtain rail to the floor is 86", hung with a curtain pole

I’d buy then and take them up til they were 86”.

Sewing isn’t hard. You could do them both in a tacking stitch in under an hour. Then iron.

nancybotwinbloom · 06/10/2021 23:15

Can you higher the curtain pole or will it look silly

'Pooling' is how they refer to it in decor circles. It's a style choice for some. Personally I'd prefer them to pool a little than to be slightly too short.

DramaAlpaca · 06/10/2021 23:26

If you're buying them ready made your nearest size is a 90cm drop.

You'll only get 86cm length if you go for custom made, and they will be much more expensive.

I quite like the 'pooling' effect so I wouldn't bother turning them up.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 07/10/2021 00:32

What header type are they?

The large eyelet type sit a couple of inches above the top of the rail anyway or with pencil pleat hang them on the lowest loop of the header tape.

Most likely they will just skim the floor and look fine.

Or put a small hem on them.

burritofan · 07/10/2021 02:52

I love curtains that pool on the floor, always looks more expensive imo

Nat6999 · 07/10/2021 03:04

I took mine up with wondered, just turned the hem over & used two strips of wonderweb, gave them a good ironing & they looked fine. The curtains had only cost me a fiver from Next clearance.

delilahbucket · 07/10/2021 11:51

If they are eyelet then 90" will be fine.

BasiliskStare · 10/10/2021 04:06

I would put them up and see what you think - I think floor length curtains look nice with one bend in them . Worst that can happen is you have to take them up or someone does for you some time in the future.

I would definitely buy 90" curtains for an 86" drop & see how you go

As a PP said customer made is way more expensive. A decent dry cleaners who do repairs could probably turn those up if you wanted for a reasonable price.

PompomDahlia · 10/10/2021 12:26

Definitely go longer and take them up if needed. I’m about to move into a house where all the curtains are slightly too short and I’m glad they’re taking them with them because it looks rubbish IMO!

ForeverQuery · 10/10/2021 13:23

Thanks everyone for the replies, I have bought the curtains today, we'll see how they look once up tomorrow

If it helps an interior designer once told me how to hang curtains - it helped someone one before - hope they look fantastic

ForeverQuery · 12/10/2021 19:27

Right curtains are up, what do you think? Too long or just right? I feel maybe a inch or 2 two long

Another pic (tie backs not on yet)

I’d take em up just a teensy bit. But up to you.

ChatterMonkey · 12/10/2021 20:27

I agree to take them up a bit, they look lovely, but look like they are slightly-too-big curtains rather than fashionably-pooling curtains.

Chasingsquirrels · 12/10/2021 20:31

I'd raise the rail

BasiliskStare · 12/10/2021 20:49

I would see which is less expensive - I think they are probably an inch or two too long ( but I would live with that. If you are a perfectionist - I would either raise the curtain pole 2 inches or - which will be cheaper , pull the curtains straight make the pleats straight ( run your hands down the pleats to make them straight ) and put a pin where you want the length take to a place which does repairs - hemming curtains is not a difficult job for someone with a proper sewing machine ( well just a straight line. )

I like curtains ( and an interior designer said this to me - ) just enough to touch the floor but plus one little bend so a little longer than the floor but v little - may be an inch

That said I think they look nice and what I have not taken into account is , if you are going to have tie backs that may make them look shorter when not drawn - so you may wish to see how they look after tie backs if that is what you are doing and then decide then
