Hi everyone,
We are soon moving into an old victorian terraced with the bathroom off the kitchen. No hallway in between just the door straight at the end of the kitchen.
Not much i can do about it but just wondered if you have any tips to make it feel less “weird”. Also, as you can see in picture bathroom is very basic, could you give me some ideas to make it feel more “cosy”?
Below the link to give you an idea! (i know very old property…)

Thank you all, its a big ask I know

We have the same layout and to be honest, you get used to it pretty quick, I'm still not used to coming downstairs in the night too pee though! 😂 that was a nightmare when pregnant 😂

It will look much better when all the mobility equipment has gone, I would paint the walls, put in new lino or paint the floorboards, put in an under storage unit at the sink, a cheery shower curtain, wooden accessories and baskets, bright towels and a plant or two can soften it.

There isn't much you can do about the layout. Lots of houses are like this and I guess you just get used to it.

Are you planning on a full refurbishment for the bathroom? If not for now I would get the pipes boxed in and swap the bath panel for tongue and groove that you can paint. Paint the walls a darker colour so it feels cosier. A sage or jade green would look nice. A nice new mirror and a shelf above with plants etc. The floor and tiles look OK in the picture so maybe just a good scrub and fresh grout.

Best of luck in your new home!

Thanks already great advice!
We are trying to negotiate with landlord if he is willing to change carpets in living rooms, and paint also to refresh the rooms. Hope he’ll be on board

As others have said you get used to it really quick! It's actually quite handy when getting the children ready for school in the mornings!!

I've lived in loads of houses with that layout in the past. You do get used to it super quickly!

In actual fact when the children were little it was actually a bonus as i could feed them, then bath them straight away, get them dressed in night things and pop them straight in front of Cbeebies with some milk whilst i whizzed upstairs to draw their curtains and turn back the beds / select a story book. Somehow, the very act of GOING UPSTAIRS TO BED made them fall asleep within a very short time!

I grew up in a house like this - a lot of older ones have this layout because when it came to adding in plumbing indoors to existing properties it was easier and cheaper to just do the ground floor. You get used to it really quickly and the plus side is no guests need to wander around upstairs to use your bathroom.

The only time it was a nuisance was D&V season...my mother made sure there was always a bucket at the top of the stairs then!

@GivenUpEntirely that is a great tip I'm going to remember !

Are you renting or buying, do you think the previous owner will really redecorate and put new carpets in if you are buying it. The carpets look ok, it all just needs a good clean and freshen up.

We are renting the property. The landlord just bought it as a buy to let, we just asked him today if he’s planning to do any works before giving the keys to us future tenants. We havent signed anything yet, hoping he does some work before renting it out, I would hope at least carpets or painting?

Ok, I wasn't sure as your link is a for sale listing. The carpets look ok, he might just get them cleaned. The whole house needs a clean, he could paint the walls and all the furniture and aids can go unless you need anything. All the white goods stay.

So re Bathroom - needs the mobility things taken out as a PP said - and a new loo seat. Perhaps a good big shelf underneath that cabinet above the loo - and then some nice coloured emulsion on the walls I'd be tempted with french blue or even light chocolate grey / brown - something to make it more "yours " so colour of your choice but I would go with a colour - not white & ( if renting I wouldn't bother boxing over pipes - I'd just paint them the same colour as walls ) and a really nice shower curtain I think would make the world of difference. Perhaps a cheap and cheerful bath mat & a few accessories and your stuff on new shelf - I reckon you can make that much nicer for not much effort / money & depending on how long you are thinking of renting for probably not worth spending a fortune . ( assuming LL happy for you to paint & put up a decent sized shelf )
