How would you design this living room?

There is no fireplace so I’m struggling to think how I would arrange the furniture and where to put the TV.
Would I use the patio doors as the focal point?

I'd put the TV on the wall with the small window and a big sofa opposite. Maybe some armchairs opposite the bay doors to look into the garden .

Lifeispassingby · 09/09/2021 21:14

I would put tv on the left hand wall and sofa opposite with the small window behind. It’s similar layout to ours, we first had sofa on the wall but felt like sitting in a walkway with the door there x

Which way does the room face? Position the TV so it doesn't get glare. Either get one of those fancy TVs that look like a picture and have it in a gallery wall or have a wall of shelving with the TV in it.

Extraslice · 09/09/2021 21:55

It’s south facing
Good point about the TV and the walkway.
The current owner has the TV on the right but I think it would be better on the left

Agree with mosaic.

Purple = 2 sofas & chair
Black = TV on unit, either flat against against wall or angled towards the window slightly.

Don't use the patio doors as a focal point. I would suggest getting a fireplace. You get fireplaces with TV units combined www.stovesareus.co.uk/gazco-radiance-135r-inset-electric-fire.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIx9jJ9uv88gIVU-nmCh3IXQUgEAQYGiABEgLbLfD_BwE - maybe not this one but it gives you an idea. Sofa on the left or right hand side depending on the light and a nice accent chair.

@perfectasalways thank you. They’re not really my style but I did think about adding a fireplace

I'd have a U shape sofa with the back against the wall with the window, then television on the wall on the left.

RandomWordGenerator · 14/09/2021 12:31

I’ve got similar size living room and bought a fireplace (electric suite to add a focal point). Otherwise the tv was the focal point which I hate.

Corner sofa or L-shaped one with a chaise end in the corner to the right of the door. Contrasting armchair in the bay. TV on or against the wall to the left of the door (with or without pretend fire.)

I would make the patio doors one focal point, as that is what you will see when you enter the room.

You then need a main focal point when you are in the room. The problem with TVs is that they are pretty ugly and you don't want them to be the focal point of the room when you are sitting down socialising but, you want do want them to be the focal point when you are watching itGrin. If you can find a way to conceal the TV eg sliding panel, have it as part of a gallery wall, in a cupboard, or in a wall of shelves with multiple focal points of interest, that will help. I know someone who had a painting on a deep framed, stretched canvas that fitted over the flat screen TV. I don't think they were big TV viewers though.

I would have the TV on the left so it doesn't block the view/path to patio doors. It will make the room larger and airier, and be the least obtrusive place for the TV when you enter the room. Then a large sofa on the right so you have the maximum number of seats in the prime viewing position and armchair on the wall next to the door.

I wouldn't have a fireplace as it will mean that you have to have the TV hung too high for the best view, if you put it above it (and it will make the fireplace look ugly) or tucked off to the side, which will detract from the fireplace anyway.

Actually, I say "I would", I did. I have a similar layout and have tried multiple combinations. My TV is in a false wall to hide it.

These are great suggestions, thank you! I think I will go with L shaped sofa on the right with accent chair.

Next question.. I would like to a panelled wall, but where?

Would make sense to panel the wall to the left as it is the only one without windows or doors.

You could perhaps build a shallow recess within the paneling for your flat screen tv. If you were to paint that wall a dark colour the tv will 'disappear' when not on.

I agree with this. It will also detract from the TV, making it less of a focal point.

I also think it could look really good to have the wall next to the door panelled. It would be less overpowering to just have a small wall panelled.

I would have the main focal point to the room on the left side, as that is the view you will have most of the time when you are using the room if the sofa is on the right. However, it is good to have some secondary focal points IYSWIM from the other main viewpoints - the door and the patio. A panelled wall next to the door would work as the focal point from the patio, the patio doors as the focal point when you enter the room with an accent chair and maybe something on the opposite of the patio doors to balance it out.

If I installed a fireplace would it matter if it was on the left hand wall or does it have to be an outside wall?

OP posts:
chesirecat99 · 17/09/2021 12:39

What type of fireplace?

You don't need a chimney or flue for electric or bioethanol fireplaces. You'll need a chimney for a traditional wood fire. Is the original chimney still in place but blocked up? Gas fires and wood burning stoves will need a flue so need to be on an external wall or routed through a chimney breast. I think there are some types of flueless gas fires though.

chesirecat99 · 17/09/2021 12:44

Bioethanol is probably your best bet if you want a flame without needing major building work:
