What to put in childrens' rooms

Bit of a first world problem here!! We recently moved into a new house and are so lucky that all of the bedrooms are really spacious.

Our old house was quite poky, and now that DD (almost 5) and DS (2.5) have decent sized rooms (10-12m2), I don't know what to put in there! The rooms look a bit bare with only beds and chests of drawers.

What do you have in your DCs bedrooms? Looking for suggestions, it doesn't just have to be functional stuff, there is room for some fun things too e.g. reading nook? I'm not keen on anything too exciting such as slides or climbing frames, as I want their rooms to be calming and encourage sleep!

Teepee tent?

CaptainPicardsToupee · 26/08/2021 12:03

Reading corner with a little chair or mini sofa and book case or book racks? Toy chest? Nice rug?

The Great Little Trading Company has some really nice stuff for inspiration!

A wardrobe to hang clothes, some toy shelves, and a reading corner? Maybe a desk each?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/08/2021 12:04

Bookcase
Desk (for drawing etc)
Toy storage?
Bean bag
Toy set up (like dolls House or lego)

I wouldn't worry. In six months you'll be tearing your hair out about the amount of stuff in there. Kids seem to attract any amount of clutter of all kinds.

Ilovewillow · 26/08/2021 12:08

My children are older but in the past we've had reading areas with a pop up tent, bean bags or a chair. We also have a playroom but they've also had cube storage for some toys in the bedroom. Fairy lights in the reading area is nice too. Small bookshelves for the reading nook. We have big bedrooms too but I try to not clutter with too much permanent furniture and leave lots of floor space for playing. Make them as fun as possible now - we've just decorated our eldest's room and it black/white and very minimal!

Pinterest is great for this, you can pick some ideas or nice features off the rooms on there and replicate in a way that works for you!

Both my kids have a 2x2 Kallax each, with books and toys in. Big rubber trug with dressy ups. Beanbag, various cushions and blankets, a (fake) sheepskin rug. Bookcase. Space on their floor with toys on baskets on it to make for easy play/tidy up.

They dont spend masses of time playing in their rooms (not sure if that's just mine). So I keep it relatively simple.

Glitter ball and disco lights.

Upholstered cube that turns into a single bed for sleepovers

indignatio · 27/08/2021 20:42

Futon for sleepovers. So far has worked for the last 18 years. The cover on the futon has changed relatively often over that time

Teepee tent with fairy lights. It's much loved

Keiki · 05/09/2021 20:23

DC have a large Kallax unit each for storage of cuddly toys, blankets and books, a wardrobe, bed, rug.

Guineapigbridge · 05/09/2021 20:26

A big shelf unit for their knick knacks and books

Toy storage, wardrobe and desk seem like essentials to me but I like to plan ahead!
If you search “small kids room” on Pinterest you’ll get loads of ideas on how to furnish a master bedroom Grin

Children? Grin

Start with a wardrobe, and then (space permitting) storage for books and toys, a desk for the older one finally a comfy chair.

thelegohooverer · 06/09/2021 14:00

I’d devote a full wall to built in storage. You won’t use it all now but over time it will be come into its own.

In our dc’s wardrobes, I moved the hanging rail down low enough for them to use as toddlers and put removable shelves in. As they’ve grown the bar has moved up.

I’d be building storage with an eye to changing it as needs change. The IKEA pax system is very versatile.

The second priority would be a safe hiding place. I think most dc have an instinct to hide so something like a tepee or the IKEA swivel egg chair.

Caspianberg · 06/09/2021 14:09

Ds bedroom has cot bed, large 8 drawer unit (IKEA), big floor rug for playing. Small coffee table for puzzles, large comfy chair for us to sit in with him for stories. Books are wall hung.

altiara · 06/09/2021 19:48

IKEA kallax snd a big bean bag
