Will I ruin this table by painting it pink?

This is my table I would like to repaint the green legs and chairs.

It is about 10 years old and has loads of dents and chips (not that you can really see it from the photos).

I love the pink peppercorn colour

PieceOfString · 15/08/2021 10:30

Looks great, it'll make you happy and you're not vandalising an original antique so roll your sleeves up and enjoy. Grin

I like the old rose. 🌹

WeAreTheHeroes · 15/08/2021 10:31

Painting won't ruin it - you need to use the right kind of paint though and prep accordingly. Emulsion won't cut it as it won't be anywhere near hard wearing enough. You need satinwood, eggshell or gloss paint. Or a chalk paint though I'm not a big fan although a friend has used Frenchic (the one suitable for outdoor use) on some garden furniture and it's brilliant and, so far, hard-wearing.

missbunnyrabbit · 15/08/2021 10:37

Pink is my favourite colour but I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to paint furniture in it. I think the green looks nice. I'd probably paint it white/cream if I wanted a chain, then go for pink accessories. But, it's your house and table. :)

missbunnyrabbit · 15/08/2021 10:38

*change not chain

altiara · 15/08/2021 10:39

Agree you need the right paint, not emulsion.

aerosocks · 15/08/2021 10:42

I prefer the old rose colour. Having said that I like green more, so I wouldn't paint it a different colour anyway.

Thanks I am going to get it done professionally. I don't have a practical bone in my body . A 100% guaranteed I would mess it up

I’m a big believer in doing what makes you happy in terms of decor and not worrying if others agree. I have a pink front door. If you want a pink table, paint it pink! You’re looking at super muted pinks anyway, hardly flamingo or fuschia. It’s already painted and it’s a farmhouse style so crack on. French chic is my bee fave paint, it’s idiot proof and requires minimal prep and faffing around.

I don’t think it will last on the chairs tbh. The studs on jeans may scratch and scrape it. You would also need to prime it according to their website & it suggests skirting, doorframes etc, not really heavy use bits of wood.

Our eggshell has a 10–20% sheen level. It’s best over the top of our primer on woodwork (like furniture, skirting boards and doorframes) or metal. And because its sheen makes it more durable, it suits walls in higher traffic areas (like hallways) or where you’re likely to need to wipe them (such as kitchens). It’s the ideal choice for bathrooms too, as it’ll stand up to the steamy atmosphere

@Wimowehwimowehwimowehwimoweh

The guy who would paint the table must use good stuff. He did these chairs for us 8 years ago and they have faired really well. The brown original chair is from 1980, maybe they are made of better stuff then modern furniture, which has lioads of scratches.

Go to b&m get a roll of wallpaper in a similar type colour, cover the table and chairs (no need for perfect wrapping) and see what you think. Ultimately though it's your house you do what you want.

I agree with this. It's your home so you get to choose how it's decorated! And if in 3 years time you don't like the pink, then it can be painted again! Go for it, I think it would look lovely in either of those pinks.
StarryStarrySocks · 15/08/2021 11:46

Go for it! My vote is for the Old Rose.
I'm not at all practical either but I can paint furniture. It's really straightforward to do it yourself. The trick is to prep well as previous posters said.

WeAreTheHeroes · 15/08/2021 18:21

@Wimowehwimowehwimowehwimoweh - which eggshell paint are you referring to? As the furniture is already painted it shouldn't need to be primed, just lightly rubbed down and the dust cleaned off.

ohthejoy21 · 15/08/2021 20:00

Definitely! I'm about to paint my front door rangwali! Bright bubblegum pink! Maybe look at camomile, it's a gorgeous pastel pink

Hebeee · 16/08/2021 00:32

Ha @ohthejoy21 I just painted our front door Rangwali too 😄 Really pleased with how it turned out - much better than the Little Greene Silt it was previously 😉

I'd definitely go for painting your table and chairs pink, OP! Think they'll look great....

Sleepingdogs12 · 16/08/2021 01:26

You won't ruin the table, it is already painted. I wouldn't call it green now and wouldn't call those colors pink. They look similar tones and I am sure it'll be fine and in keeping with your decor. If not repaint .

Butterbeer4All · 16/08/2021 02:15

I like the Old Rose color

ohthejoy21 · 16/08/2021 14:59

@Hebeee that's good to hear! I'm thinking of all brass fittings to go with it... my teenage boy isn't impressed!

ThisAintNoPartyThisAintNoDisco · 16/08/2021 15:10

When you said pink I wasn’t sure..I thought you meant candy pink. But actually I really like either of those lovely muted pinks you have picked. I’d go for it definitely. Satin finish would be my choice, take your time don’t rush each stage. A coat of satin Polyvine (not gloss finish) to finish might be a good idea

I did my dining table a few years ago. Cream legs and frame and I stained the table top and it turned out beautifully.

JaninaDuszejko · 16/08/2021 15:14

Repainting a different colour won't ruin the table. Both colours are lovely, I'd go for the bolder Old Rose for your table and chairs. If you get bored of it it a few years you can paint it again.
