Lick paint

Looking to paint my living room which has a grey sofa, blush pink pouffe, and olive green armchair, all velvet. Also have various rattan bits and bobs. The room is fairly small and north facing, originally I was going to paint the chimney wall green but it's far too dark. I've got a sample of slaked lime but it's a bit meh in the room.

I don't want to use farrow and ball as the entire house has been painted in it and it's flaking all over the place. I was keen to use little greene but it's taking weeks to get samples (nowhere near sells it) and I'm a bit out of inspiration on their colours.

Have just ordered samples of lick white 06 and pink 01 and wondered if anyone had tried this paint and what the paint was like - and also if a slightly pinky white would work with existing decor?

I'm planning to get big quite dramatic pictures to go on the walls, one will be pinky and one greeny. Have lots of house plants and a boho style rug.

I've also got timeless which I'm about to do the bathroom in , so that's an option too, but was hoping to retain the chalky look in the living room .

Is there a particular reason you are avoiding something as straightforward as Dulux?

olivethegreat · 06/08/2021 16:32

I'd like a chalky finish ideally. But I am thinking about dulux timeless. Lick has the best colours for the type of thing I like but hard to say how much of that is down to a pretty well executed website and marketing !

Just get farrow and ball or little greene colour matched at Johnstone's.

They do ultra Matt but very durable finishes.

I’d avoid Lick just because they’ve spent so much on freebies for instagrammers, you’ll be making up the difference and paying for that. I’m not convinced it’s great stuff.

Spudina · 06/08/2021 21:49

I’m about to order some too OP so I hope it’s good. I’ve had the colour swatches up for weeks. I follow an illustrator on FB who recommends them and get photos look brilliant.

I've been looking at mylands too but it's more expensive and the colours aren't quite what I want. I might order one of their samples just to try it as I'm sure it's better paint.

Lick are good with the marketing, their website is easier and it's much much cheaper to get samples and they come fast! I agree it could be all a gimmick but I'm not necessarily of the view that because a company markets well that means it's crap.

So far I've seen a couple of experts (not instagramers) say it's pretty good. The images on Instagram look better than the ones for mylands as well.

I like the low voc also. So that means lick mylands or little greene I think ?

Do much prefer the names too. Pink 01-05. Rather than the ridiculous names!

Johnstone's look quite good anyway, hadn't thought about them . Will research !

I have a friend who's a professional decorator. He used it recently and was very skeptical but pleasantly surprised by how good it was. He did say it was quite hard to get out of the tin though.

Why was it hard to get out of the tin Quantum? Was it too thick?
showmethegin · 08/08/2021 22:42

Have you checked Craig and Rose? Their colours are beautiful and they paint like a dream

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 09/08/2021 07:56

@JedEye because it comes in canisters like mini oil cans, with a little screw top to one side, rather than tins that you take the whole top off. That means you can’t get into the tin to scrape it out.

Misbeehived · 09/08/2021 08:04

I haven’t tried Lick but think you may like this based on your description. www.atelierellis.co.uk

Colours are really beautiful and paint quality is excellent. FYI I have little greene, Dulux, Atalier Ellis in my house. I don’t personally rate F&B.

MavisMonkey · 09/08/2021 08:21

For years little greene has been my go to - I love the quality and the range of colours. Recently though I got sucked in by Instagram marketing and I've used lick in two rooms. I have been impressed with it colour wise and coverage wise so I would recommend it. It is a pain in the ass to get out of the tin without making a mess as a pp says.

JedEye · 09/08/2021 21:06

Thank you 😊

dontcallmelen · 12/08/2021 22:42

Haven’t used Lick, really like Mylands paint it covers beautifully very hardwearing Yy Craig & Rose have some lovely colours.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 12/08/2021 22:47

Recently used lick in DC room. Really good quality paint but as pp mentioned it’s tricky to get out of the tin and also we forgot to put the plastic lid in before replacing the metal lid and it took us forever to get it back open.

Sorry to rehash but just wondering if you went with Lick 01 OP as in considering

thanks @olivethegreat
