I live in the UK, in the south east and have a south east facing garden. We had an extension done last year and had an electric point placed on the roof for an awning. However when looking an electrical awnings I was gobsmaked how expensive they are and just felt that living in the UK it just was not worth the money seeing as we'd probably only use it for a couple of months a year!!

Anyway roll on now and the hot weather we've been having, the back of our house is just oppressive and it's where we eat breakfast and hang out during the day when home with the kids. I've been thinking of alternatives that are more cost effective for some shade but I just cannot think of any that would also provide shelter from the sun in the house other than curtains which we are not getting or an awning.

Curious what people's thoughts are who have awnings, are they worth it? If so any company's you would recommend? Or any alternatives.

Ours came with the house, and it is invaluable. We often say we wouldn't have installed one ourselves because of the expense, but we're so glad the previous owner wasn't as tight as we are.

How about a sail shade? I've got a horrendous hot, south facing, wall of glass kitchen and I have a rectangle sail shade. The one I have is 3x2 metres, it was from Amazon and about £25 - it also came with all the fixing bits.

We’ve built a wooden canopy with sloping roof on the back of our house. My husband is handy though. Think about £500 for the wood and felt/rubber cover for roof. With 2 wooden posts to support it in the ground also. Google wooden canopy and have a look.

South facing garden and picture windows means the sun beats in here. Got a couple of quotes last August but didn't go ahead then as we felt it was too late in the year to be useful but finally ordered in January, had it installed in March and enjoying the benefits right now.

Ours is Markilux installed by a localish company. Expensive but having had several holidays cancelled that paid for it. Very happy with it.

There was a thread about a brise soleil in the property section yesterday, I had to Google it, I don't know if that would be any more expensive than an awning.
A shade sail as suggested by a pp would be a very good alternative I think, you could take it down when not needed.

We have a manual awning (2.5 wide) from Aasom was £250.00 Dh & a friend put it up in a couple of hours, does a really good job of shading our large south facing kitchen window, I wasn’t keen as I don’t like the stripey ones, ours is plain pale grey actually looks ok.

Where did you get it from? Can only find the striped ones online!

Ooh this would be perfect as we also have south facing glass bi-fold door that basically fries us all in the kitchen. Do you recall the brand you used on Amazon and if you'd recommend? Thank you!

dontcallmelen · 28/07/2021 08:08

Sorry I spelt it wrong company called Aosome they do all sorts of garden stuff they had both the stripes & plain awnings in both manual/electric.

dontcallmelen · 28/07/2021 08:42
