Colour(s?) for north facing double room?

Our living/dining room is the opened up ground floor of a small Victorian terrace. It’s fully open plan so no hallway and stairs open to the living room.

The front half is the table area and has a north-facing bay. The back half is the sitting/tv area and has no external window but does have an internal window borrowing light from a side return room. The room is about 4m * 7m.

We use the table for eating but also gaming, hobbies, paperwork and pretty much anything else that needs a table. The open space where the hall was is from time to time used for bike maintenance.

I’d love to paint the room a dark, rich colour like teal or plum but I’m worried it would be too dark for the task stuff that goes on in the room. But I’m also worried painting it light colours will make it feel cold, especially at the back where there is little natural light. I really don’t want cream or magnolia.

I’ve thought about painting the two halves different colours, with the bark dark and the front light, but I’ve not been able to find any examples of that which suggests it doesn’t work.

Has anyone tried that, or can recommend colours for a long north facing room?

We painted our north west facing living room Stone 4 from Paint and Paper Library. It looks beautiful-greenish in morning and a warm stone colour in the evening. Stone comes in shades 1-5 so you can vary the depth in different locations but the colours will harmonise with each other. We really like it.

@OooPourUsACupLove I’m having a similar dilemma! We’re about to move to a house which has been extended so has a big north facing kitchen diner and a sitting area at the back with no window. Patio doors at the dining end so light from there. I wondered if the sitting area could take a dark or mid tone. I looked at this blog www.oldbrandnew.com/blog/2018/4/how-behr-helped-transform-my-space which might be what you’re hoping to achieve?
I’ve got the added dilemma of whether we can afford to replace the kitchen and definitely need new flooring…
If anyone lives in a North Facing space and has any tips I’d love to hear!

You may find this a refreshing viewpoint…

Thank you everyone for the suggestions and advice. @39andabit that blog was very helpful, good to see actual examples.

DPIL have a similar layout, and they created a slight demarcation by putting in a square arch between front and back. Not obtrusive at all, but it has allowed them to have different colours in front and back areas without it looking obvious.
