Need a rug

Help please! Our lounge is looking a bit bare after we got rid of our previous rug which was a nightmare to keep clean and which I was never fully sold on anyway. Now need a new one but am struggling.

The room is painted grey (want to redecorate) the floor is a warm rustic wood and in regards to furniture we have a grey mid century type sofa and a couple of marble topped side table. Opposite is a fireplace and white shelves in the alcoves. Room isn’t massive and is rectangular. South facing so gets good light, somewhat diluted by a lot of foliage in front garden.

I like the Persian/Berber rugs but they are everywhere at the moment and I’d feel a bit insta. I have 2 children under 3 and two cats who have ruined previous rugs so need something that wouldn’t easily pull threads.

We had this rug before (bought prior to kids) www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-jelly-beans-rug/p1815381

But getting crumbs out of between the tufts was a nightmare, though the cats couldn’t destroy it.

Any ideas? I want it to be easy to Hoover/clean, cooler/lighter tones and to have a bit of cushion to it.

No help on the pattern/style as I love a Persian rug but I would recommend as much of a pattern as possible with a mix of light and dark as it hides any stains your kids or cat make.

Which is why a Persian rug is so good!

I have a Turkish rug, is that what you mean by ‘persian rug’?

I have to be honest, imo, no rug is cat safe, they destroy them all, some quicker than others but ultimately they all succumb.

Turkish rugs are very durable but they are no match for cat claws, our old cat managed to make a snag in ours in less than a week.
There’s no cushion to it either as they are very thin.

The best rug I’ve had for withstanding cat damage was sheepskin but it was impossible to keep looking nice, needed vacuuming multiple times a day, needed daily brushing with a slicker brush, collected dust, stains do not come out easily, you can’t wash it etc

I've got this from Next. I've also got 6 cats, and although they do scratch at it, they've not ruined it. Easy to vacuum, easy to shake out, looks nice against my wooden floors.

Following. Imp also looking out for a new lounge rug - but struggling to find anything decent.

We are looking at rugs at the moment, but are going to try 'ruggable' because at least then when the cats vomit/wee on it we can stick it in the washing machine!

Do love a Persian/Turkish rug. They are quite thin but I wonder if you could buy a cushiony based for underneath. I’d have to ‘train’ the cats. To be fair they’ve left the new sofa and upholstered headboard alone now they are older.

Had thought of Berber which is plusher but like @Powertothepetal similar to a sheepskin with its long pile it would be hard to maintain.

@gurglebelly had seen Ruggable on social media and had been tempted. Some of the reviews have put me off though Confused

With a cat you want something they can’t get their little claws into. The shorter the pile the better. Something like this might be quite good
