Wall Panelling?

Has anyone used this in their home? Is it difficult to keep clean? Considering half panelling throughout downstairs to cut down on wallpapering entire walls and appreciate that painted panels can be wiped down but concered they might be dust magnets and really don't want to spend my life cleaning any more than I already do! We've had tongue n' groove in the bathroom before and the inner grooves tended to look grimy no matter how often I wiped down. Haven't used these sorts of panels before and they always look elegant in pictures but suspect the reality may be very different so am asking those who have it...would you do it again? If you have had it but chose full wallpaper next time when you decorated, can you tell me what swayed you? Thanks. Pics are for examples and I prefer the first one showing a hallway.

The picture of the sitting room paneled is beyond ugly OP. The reason you prefer the hallway look is because they mimic the beautiful and classic Georgian panels seen in period houses. The full wall of panels is just wrong from a visual point.

I have to say I agree with @FortunesFave , I like the hall but the panels in the living room dominate the room far to much .

I am in the process ( nearly finished thank god ) of decorating , I chose to put up wall paper that looks like wood panelling on the bottom third of the wall. but if I could of afforded real wood I certainly of gone with it

Have. Ever had panelling myself, but I'd like something like this, with shelving, when I move.

Agree about not doing a full wall like picture 2.

Our last house was Arts and Crafts and it had full height panelling like that in the pic a previous poster described as beyond ugly. Imho, it looked stunning even though it had been painted 😏

We have replicated the look in our current - much older - home, a 1650s non-listed mill that the Victorians and subsequent owners had ripped the guts/character out of.

We did this before it became a thing, lol!

Ours is again floor to ceiling, painted in F&B Olive and far from dominating the space, gives it a much needed boost of character 😃 DH built ours from scratch.

If you like it, OP, go for it but don't just choose it because it's currently in vogue. We have a very eclectic, boho style home that it suits and won't be changing this when the current trend ends.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I personally don't feel the 2nd pic (full wall) is 'beyond ugly' - it's just a different look according to taste and you either like it or you don't. I prefer the 1st pic of the hall because it's identical to my hall so easy to visualise end result. But I appreciate everyone's input and can report that family vote has gone to...brick! Our living room gets a lot of light and the other walls are all white, with white shutters at windows both ends (its an open plan living room dining room) so it doesn't look as dark as in the pic, it completely matches the floor and looks gorgeous with our 'warm scandi industrial' style (we have cream sofas though, and a lot of warm, natural wood) so very happy all round.

Forgot to say that we're just doing all the other rooms in white with one wall in the brick, also with white shutters, as the flooring is the same and runs throughout. It just looks and feels so fresh and surprisingly inviting, which I'm glad about as I was concerned it would look too grungy. We love it.

I like your new look .
You said it's brick but it looks more like wood , is it ?

spotcheck · 15/07/2021 09:36

That's really lovely OP
Did you use brick wallpaper, or the brick tiles?

I was desperate for board and batten in my bedroom. I wasn't convinced I could do it, so did something else. I love the look though.

They sell strips of batten in Homebase and B&Q
if anyone is interested 😊

I really dislike the third image. The wall over-dominates the rest of the room. I would feel claustrophobic with such a dark wall looming over me like that.

We had such a wall in one of the houses we lived in and I hated it.

I like the panelling in the hallway in the first picture, but it will definitely be a dust magnet.

HasaDigaEebowai · 15/07/2021 09:42

Whilst you’ve chosen brick now I can confirm that the panelling does collect dust and so increases cleaning time. We did our dining room about 7 years ago. Bottom panelled, top wallpaper. Its lovely but its a bit annoying that its become so popular.

@AlCalavicci Sorry, yes, it's wood effect but in answer to @spotcheck we used vinyl tiles, which is why I called it 'brick'.

@RampantIvy Sorry you dislike it but the window in the image is much smaller than ours, which fills the whole wall, both ends, and the colour in reality isn't as dark so not at all claustrophobic.

@HasaDigaEebowai Thanks for confirming that the panelling does collect dust and so increases cleaning time. I feared that would be the case as I said in my original post. The tiles are very smooth and will only need a 'dusting' with soft brush attachment on vacuum which, since I do that at ceiling height all around the room anyway won't make that much of a difference.

Incidentally, I haven't tiled the whole main wall in the living room, just the two alcoves either side of the fireplace. Everything else is white. And in the other rooms I've tiled smaller walls just for contrast to the white. As I said, it looks fresh and inviting and we love it.
