Anyone have a Swedish plastic rug/Horredsmattan/Pappelina in their kitchen??

I know a rug in the kitchen sounds BONKERS but running out of options as tongue and groove floorboards got wrecked by a dishwasher leak and for various boring reasons would be an expensive/near impossible nightmare to replace (kitchen is open plan into dining/lounge, they don't make the exact floorboards anymore etc). Considered if we could tile the kitchen area of the open plan space but also proving v expensive and complicated.

So wondering about a PLASTIC rug that can apparently be hoovered, mopped and thrown in the washing machine. There are some Swedish (of course) ones that actually look a lot nicer than I expected. Apologies to any Swedes, I've seen a variety spelt Horredmatta or Horredsmatan that look like this:
www.trendcarpet.co.uk/en/plastic-mats/
or these by Pappelina
www.pappelina.com/en/inspiration/rum
bit more expensive but way less than trying to sort the actual floor.

Kind of coming round to the idea of a kitchen rug that's theoretically easy to clean but wondered if anyone had experience of what they are actually like to live with...can you really mop them effectively as I realistically wouldn't want to be chucking it in the washing machine every week?

Thank you for any thoughts!

Gosh I never knew that's wat they were called!

We had one when I was growing up.

I have no idea how DMum cleaned it (too stiff to go into a machine, surely?) I guess she'd have hosed it down - you'd need a bit of pressure to the water to get into the crevices.

But if they really have changed and are less still, and will fit in a machine these days, then I think they'd be very easy to live with

I have one in my hall (Pappelina) and have to admit I don't wash it anywhere as often as I should (just been thinking I need to do it, in fact). But I really like it and it's easy to look after. Just make sure you have good underlay.

I'm also considering this for my new kitchen https://www.rockettstgeorge.co.uk/beija-vinyl-floor-runner-sofi-antique.html

Have a pappelina rug in the hall. About once a year I give it a scrub outside on a warm day and leave it to dry. I can see it’d work well in a kitchen.

I have a rug in my kitchen but it’s a normal one not plastic. It’s more comfortable to stand on and seems to stay clean, I just vacuum it daily.

Thanks everyone for the comments and your experience, that's really helpful. That's nice you had one growing up @Ethelswith!
Makes sense they'd be a bit stiff for washing machine, especially if big - couldn't quite think how they'd feel.
Vinyl runner is good idea as well - thanks @Zinnia, had hoped that type of thing existed but couldn't think how to search!

We use an outdoor rug, from Dunelm or somewhere for a tenner, I shake it outside and occasionally hang it over the washing line and chuck soapy water at it, scrub and hose it off.

Fortyfifty · 05/07/2021 23:10

I have one along by the sink /dishwasher. I occasionally scrub it by hand. It's reversible too. I really like it.

We have a big ass Persian rug in the kitchen! Not machine washable, just gets hoovered regularly.

StillWeRise · 10/11/2022 12:30

I've been looking at these, but so hard to tell from a picture on the internet!
what do the Horredsmatten feel like?
I'm going to discount the Pappelina as they are apparently made from new PVC and I'd rather have recycled plastic if I'm going to use plasric
Its for a kitchen floor to protect newly sanded and varnished wood/

bilbodog · 10/11/2022 12:39

www.weavergreen.com/collections/rugs

these are made of recycled plastic and are washable too.

StillWeRise · 10/11/2022 13:28

yes, I've just been looking at those, have you got one?

User438651209 · 10/11/2022 15:30

We have the large Turtlemats in our kitchen as our floor isn't the best, i hoover them and they also go in the washing machine.

lucieciel83 · 10/11/2022 17:43

@StillWeRise can't deny that the the Horredsmattan does feel like plastic if you touch it (saying this as I think some recycled plastic rugs manage to feel like wool or cotton). I would say it doesn't look plasticky because of the way it's woven and is very matte but having just looked at the weavergreen website, does look more like plastic than those ones do (jealous!). Lighting is terrible at the moment but will take a pic tomorrow. I still think it looks good, is easy to clean (hoover/sweep along with the floor and mop it every so often) and a couple of friends have bought one after seeing it

We had a rug in old house kitchen. Just hoovered it, any spills got spot-cleaned, and have it the occasional carpet shampoo. It genuinely didn’t get revolting! But it was a cast-off from someone else - I’m not sure I could’ve spent a lot on a rug for the kitchen.
