Refurbing pine louvered wardrobe

Evening everyone

I've inherited a large wardrobe which is sliding slatted (louvred) doors in a big frame.

I don't want to have to sand all the slats individually as it'll take forever, but I am keen to give it a fresh lease of life.

Could Annie Sloan chalk paint work do you think? Has anyone tried it on such a project?

I think the frame would need some sanding as it's glossed already, but the louvres/slats are lightly varnished pine.

Can you first use a varnish remover on the slats? Providing they are pretty smooth I would then use a spray paint primer to avoid the need to sand. Spray the slats and perhaps even use a spray chalk paint to try and build thin even coats. Finish off with a light wax to seal it.

Having said that, I wouldn't paint a lovely wooden wardrobe - but I can see why you don't fancy sanding and refinishing each slat! Good luck!

Oooh there's not much that's lovely about it, I promise!

Good ideas though, thanks!

Yes! It works really well. I had some dark stained Louvre shutter doors in a built in cupboard. Couldn’t afford to change it, so I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Paris Grey to cover it. Will find a picture.

Here it is, one side done the other not touched. I have seen lots of pictures on Pinterest, so I went for a worn paint French shutter look. It was the easiest thing to do, just didn’t overload the brush, leaving some parts like shabby chic. Didn’t bother waxing and it didn’t need it.

It was supposed to be a temporary measure, but it blends in so well with the rest of the room, I have kept it 6 years later.
You can get a painted look rather than the worn look, but I was aiming to make them look like old shutters that had been repurposed.

@goldpendant sorry should’ve tagged you to make sure you see it.

Thanks @MegaCityOne that fantastic to hear, looks great. I think I'll go for a more painted look, presume just an extra coat or so?

@goldpendant Yes, just one more coat would do it. Also look at FrenchIc lazy range that doesn’t need waxing - a bonus on Louvre doors. I didn’t bother waxing but i think a more painted look will need it. frenchicpaint.co.uk/collections/lazy-range
