Teen girl room paint colour

DDs room is pink which was picked a few years ago and we are going to redecorate.

She has rejected every single colour I have suggested so far. However I have been suggesting lighter colours but thinking I should go a bit bolder. Her fav colour is orange but thankfully doesn’t want an orange room. It can’t be ‘girly’.
We were considering grey but it’s south facing and gets no light in the morning and might be bit cold looking and I’m not keen.

Any successful colours people have used. There’s some built in white colours so needs to go with white!

Is there any reason not to take her to the paint store to pick for herself, they have those lighboxes so you can see how it looks in different lighting and I suppose you can slightly "edit" her choices but to be honest I bet she would enjoy having some freedom of choice after all its her space. I do understand it can be tricky, my teen wanted black at first but I asked her to reconsider after explaining that as she had the smallest room, a dark colour would make it seem even smaller and to my relief she chose a nice warm grey with sage green accessories to go with the white furniture I had in there already. Maybe get your D.D to make a mood board with you on Pinterest or something, so you can visualise the final result together.

Just to add my mum chose my decor when I was a teenager...and I absolutely hated it...I had no input whatsoever, hated the colour, It was the complete opposite of what I would have liked...but I never said anything as I knew she put a lot of effort into it, only problem is that is was completely her taste and nothing to do with my preferences or interests. I was massively jealous that my older sibling got to have input in their room decor. I did not enjoy spending time in mine at all...dramatic I know but I was a teen after all Blush

clpsmum · 06/06/2021 00:44

She has to live with it so I'd let her chose. I think a bright orange and white would be fab tbh

Scarletbutnotohara · 06/06/2021 00:47

My daughter is 11 but we’ve recently gave her a more grown up room. She chose it herself and went for grey and teal. Two light grey walls, one white wall and the other wall has a grey patterned wallpaper on it with teal in the pattern.
Then she has a teal bedspread with a grey throw, grey chest of drawers with a teal night lamp. Her floor is laminated with a teal heart shaped rug. Wardrobes were fitted in the room and they are white. We got some grey sparkly knobs for them. She has grey blinds. On the white wall she has black and white photos of family and friends in teal frames.

Orange is fab though! Get some tester pots to see what the colours are like when they’re dry. We love white walls and we buy the paint from b&q that you can easily wipe any marks off it. White and orange would be nice or orange and a light grey maybe?

ShinyGreenElephant · 06/06/2021 00:50

DD12 has just gone for forest green, black, white and gold. I thought the green would be too dark but it looks fab. One green wall then a green throw on the bed and accessories, lots of gold accessories, white furniture and bedding, big fluffy black and white rug and matching cushions

AlmostSummer21 · 06/06/2021 00:55

15yo chose a dark blue before it was 'on trend' (about 4 years ago) she still loves it! She has that on one wall and a lighter blue on the other walls. I've said we can repaint it if she wants, but she still loves it.

alexdgr8 · 06/06/2021 00:55

why are you making suggestions.
let the girl choose.

itsnotnormalisit · 06/06/2021 02:02

I would go neutral, like white, and have led lights around the ceiling, that way she can change the colour as she sees fit... teenager rooms are usually dark so the lights would work ;)

pickingdaisies · 06/06/2021 08:49

If the room is South facing then grey should look fine, maybe three walls light grey and one wall darker, with orange in the accessories. Or hand her the paint chart and let her loose on Pinterest.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 06/06/2021 08:58

DD’s is painted white with a colour changing lightbulb and colourful duvet and wall stickers. Means it’s really easy to change up the look as her favourite colour changes.( Was pink, now mint green).

Light grey paint would be fine in a south facing room too.

But I’d let her choose.

This is the colour changing bulb www.amazon.co.uk/Colour-Changing-Bulbs/s?k=Colour+Changing+Bulbs&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Maybe a 'non-girly' lilac?
Or yellow which is would be great with orange accessories.
Agree with involving her - get her to make a mood board?

She’s not very confident so she wants my suggestions. She will only pick if I partly do it for her.
I was looking for some pics of completed rooms last night. I suspect she just can’t imagine what it will be like.

DD (12) has purple and silver. She has a slightly sparkly silver on one wall, purple around the window and behind her bed, and the other wall is mostly wardrobe doors. She also has those LED strip lights. Her bed is a silvery grey and she has a grey floor.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 06/06/2021 09:34

Did you look at Pinterest? Lots on there

BiBabbles · 06/06/2021 10:13

Mine found a walk with us in the paint aisle where there are sampled painted in person helped them pick.

My teen DD1 (and 11 year old DD2) chose a dark purple (Wilkos plum berry) which I worried would be too cold/dark, but with their white cupboards and the light floors it worked well. Very cosy and comfortable, hard as ever to get DD1 out of her room Grin

Teen DS1 chose a very bright orange (Wilkos retro orange which we put on the lower half of the room), DS2 chose electric blue (upper half) for their much smaller room. It looks quite nice, though the size might help with that as they are very vibrant colours.

MrsFrisbyMouse · 07/06/2021 13:50

Mine (15) chose Craig and Rose "Fleurie".

This was taken on a fairly dark day - but the room is normally flooded with light (attic room) She has white furniture, bright rugs/duvet etc and the room feels very grown up but still fun. And being that we haven't seen her since it was done, I think she's happy with the results...

Both of my teenagers went with white walls and bedding so they could change the soft furnishings, prints etc to get a different look if they fancied a change. It looks great.

JoyOrbison · 07/06/2021 15:33

Call to b and q and take lots of different little sample cards home. There is such a wide range of dark, muted, pale and vibrant oranges that I'm sure your dd can find a shade she will love!

beggingforsleep · 07/06/2021 22:40

If she likes orange, how about a half painted coral wall?

MajorNeville · 07/06/2021 22:54

My dd15 had her room done last year and everything ceiling to floor is white, she then has those strip LED colour changing lights around the top of the walls.

altiara · 08/06/2021 20:57

Mine did aqua and white. Aqua curtains and accessories and also some black and white accessories. All her furniture is white but she has oak doors on her wardrobe and bedroom door. Looks great.

Spanglybangles · 09/06/2021 07:53

Mine (14) opted for white walls, grey laminate floor, white IKEA furniture, grey and white curtains, white wooden venetian blinds, the led strip lights, a grey sheepskin style rug and peg lights to display her favourite photos on the wall. All very grey and white Grin
