Storage challenge for you!!

For those mumsnetters who love a bit of storage I have a challenge for you all! I've got a new loft bedroom with this (see photos) cupboard to put all the usual stuff-some books, shoes, handbags, toiletries and some seasonal clothes. Wall height is about 94cm on the outer walls. I need cheap. I was thinking trodfast for the toiletries with the shallow drawers. Or maybe cheap plastic drawers for everything. Do you accept the challenge? TIA

Just get some plastic crates with lids and stack them on top of eachother.
Clear ones so you can see what's inside.

Thank you. I think that's a good idea for the shoes- particularly the ones I don't use often. I've found some plastic drawers for the toiletries

You could get a local carpenter round to see how much to build some shelves.
I’ve not done this but my friend did. Looks amazing!

Don't get plastic boxes for shoes.

I thought they were great, until I packed a pair away after wearing them and, months later, brought them out covered in mould.

The plastic boxes allowed the mould to grow as they inhibit evaporation.

If you do get plastic boxes, the shoes have to be left to dry thoroughly (sweat as well as weather) and treated with antifungal spray before going back into the boxes.

Can't afford a carpenter sadly.

Thanks for the tip re shoes and plastic boxes. Never thought of that!

For shoes, I buy the really useful boxes meant for shoes. They have a front flap so you can access the shoes even if there at the bottom of the stack. Put them in the boxes clean and dry first though!

The IKEA kitchen planner might be helpful. You need to use it on a pc rather than a phone or tablet if you value your sanity. You can set up the dimensions of the space. Some of the kitchen units might actually work for you but they also have an office tab with more storage options. I can’t remember if trofast is in there or not.

I'll have a look at IKEA. Thank you

What's your budget OP? Google low storage unit/with baskets/with drawers. There's lot to choose from at all price levels. Ikea's Kallax range with Drona boxes might suit?

wonkylegs · 12/06/2021 17:19

You can get silica bags to go in the plastic boxes with shoes to absorb any moisture - Amazon / the range / boyes

IKEA do nylon fabric collapseable boxes for shoes with a mesh front so they're breathable and contents are visible. They also have velcro for stacking.

Shoe boxes (Skubb range) www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/skubb-shoe-box-white-90186391/

littlem133 · 12/06/2021 17:36

I like those skubb boxes! Could pop them on a cheap bookcase or something

Would one (or 2) of the Ikea trolleys like Raskog fit in the middle section? They are great for toiletries and it gives easy access to the side sections and the back cupboard door into the eaves (or whatever the brown door is!) as you can just wheel them out.

My DC use this type of clear plastic shoe box at uni. They clip together so you can move them as a stack and they fold flat when they aren't in use. They aren't airtight so there are no problems with mould.
