Have a 1950 house . Mid century styles lend self to it . And doing it up gradually in this style . Exept for conseratory which will be tounge in cheek cath kidston . I have bought from made , but the furniture is mostly made of mdf rather than wood. I have some ercol .
Any ideas re ..
Flooring.colours. curtians . Accessories ... lights , vases .. etc. New or true vintage references much appriciated . I seem to be stuck on e bay or made and need to somehow branch out . Thanks .

If you have some Ercol, join the FB groups. Lots of people with the same taste in decoration and homewares.

Try looking in local auction rooms. We’ve got lots of lovely Ercol and G-plan furniture that way and it’s usually much cheaper than buying from eBay or vintage shops.

I have a massive weakness for mid century modern furniture - I live in a 1970s house!
I got most of my things from eBay or preloved and randomly the odd cat rescues/charity shops - look for ones that do house clearances, there are a couple of charity shops my way that only do furniture and I've got a few things from there (don't know why crazy old cat ladies always have ercol furniture?!). Avoid the more commercial charity shops like oxfam etc - look for the small local ones

Had to shop around a lot though and not rush/bide my time for the right things. Things like sideboards and ladderax shelving have hugely gone up in price lately but if you don't mind sanding back and restaining yourself you can still pick up a bargain. It helps to have a large vehicle or access to a van though as most items are collection only and I've had to travel a fair bit for things - most of my things have come from "up north" - Sheffield, Leeds, Nottingham etc - not sure why?

Helps to set up a saved search on eBay for catch words like ercol / 1960s furniture etc and check regularly and avoid commercial sellers

You can get some modern alternatives to things like string shelving and actually IKEA often have retro inspired pieces

I got a sunburst clock and mirror from John Lewis of all places

Have a look at Sanderson Clocks fabric pattern for curtains as a modern alternative
I wouldn't buy original fabrics second hand just because the fire rating was different back then

Vinterior, eBay, and quite a lot of West Elm and Made.com modern furniture is fitting.

If your budget can stand it then Heals stocks modern Ercol and some beautiful furniture that has a mid century vibe.

Check out Heals for fabrics and extras that work with the style too.

Also try Oliver bonas for accessories like vases - they sometimes have orange glass ones which is a very 1960s colour

Same with dunelm they have some organise glass ones

And next had a bubble vase which was retro looking too

andivfmakes3 · 26/05/2021 20:13

You are close enough to visit Pool Bank Vintage Interiors, they have a website and will deliver www.poolbankinteriors.co.uk/

wowsaidtheowl · 26/05/2021 20:49

Etsy is good too - midcenturyReFind is a small seller who we’ve used a few times.

Tiddleandplonk · 26/05/2021 21:20

Thanks all . I love the deer wood ornaments ( 1970s? ) too. Happy findings all xx

I got mine from second hand shops. My finds included ercol, handmade curtains in beautiful fabrics and fabulous kitchen/tableware. One of the best things I found was an era-made knock off g-plan coffee table in formica, £5.

ichundich · 26/05/2021 21:28

I've recently found a lovely Danish teak sideboard (solid wood) on Facebook Marketplace for £400. It's a long one (over 2m) and apparently quite rare now. Once the weather is reliably dry I'm going to sand and then oil it, although it's not in a terrible condition anyway.

muckypaws · 27/05/2021 18:07

Also keep an eye on FB Marketplace as people will sometimes put things on there when they are clearing houses and it also has the benefit of being local.

Auctions. We picked up an Ercol dining room cupboard for £95 yesterday to match the old sideboard of my dad's we already have. The identical one is currently for sale for £950 on Vinterior.

It's a knack of mixing old with new so it looks more edgy than dated. Says she? desperately wondering what to put on top of new Ercol cupboard...
