HELP! Just moved into council... cheap flooring advice

HelloWorld2577 · 13/05/2021 22:20

Hi everyone!

I have just moved into a council housing association property and that I am so so grateful for after bidding for years.

But

The floors are blue vinyl tiles throughout. They are horrific. Like a swimming pool.

I need to cover them ASAP but don't have thousands lying around!

Vinyl or Carpet? For what rooms too (ie vinyl in kitchen or lounge etc). Where is the best place to purchase this (online retailer preferably!).

Thanks

Carpet squares off ebay worked well for us as a cheap flooring, though vinyl would likely work better in the kitchen.

Go to a local carpet shop rather than a chain if you don’t need the interest free credit. I’d carpet bedrooms and possibly lounge, we’ve never paid more than £250 for a carpet to be fitted including underlay. For the kitchen I’d stick to vinyl.

You can do smaller rooms with carpet off cuts? Sometimes you can pick up some bargains.

We used laminate downstairs when we moved in to our council house, it has lasted 10 years (really needs replacing now), we did the stairs and landing with off cuts Thad my dad patched together 🤣.

You can buy laminate and fit it yourself, and then add rugs to rooms like the living room and bedrooms - will be much easier to keep clean. For the bathroom, you might find it cheapest to paint and stencil the vinyl to your taste. There are lots of how to guides online, and it’s a fun project.

Facebook market place, sometimes you find solid wood flooring for free where its been taken up, laminate really cheap second hand, off cuts of carpet or vinyl. I found enough large marble effect tiles for the bathroom floor and walls.....completely free.

Flooring superstore online is great for off cuts/end of roll pieces. You can get some real bargains, then you just need to pay fitting or rope in someone to help you if you can fit it yourself.

We did stairs and landing for £50 by buying an end of roll piece and fitting it ourselves.

Would rugs work? Maybe a cheaper temporary option at least. Would it be worth asking on facebookmarket place to see if any one has some for free?
