Have lived in 1930detetched and besutiful victorian terraces.
We bought a semi , 1950 e council house as the location we have moved to is a stunning seaside location and v v costly.
Am thinking that the rooms are really box like and the windows are the wrong way round .. ir wide ,not tall and narrow ..

Am trying to inderstand this style of house.
Its all utilylitarian .. pvc window v old house .. wood sash .
Have seen a book called style council .. were x council houses are done up in mid century ,almost brutalist style . Anyone else done up ( paint , we cant afford to move walls etc ) an ex council house in a similar style , working woth the era?

We did what we could with our old house with the remaining features that were left. Like you didn't have loads at the time to move walls etc which I think helped keep things original. We used greens (overtly olive), ochre, whites and greys. We did it before the trends of these colours recurred so our house looked fairly on trend at the time.
We trawled eBay, second hand furniture shops for items of furniture or lamp bases that were of the era and repaired or modernised them to suit our needs and so they blended with more modern items we had.
We did have a modern kitchen but it actually matched in with the colours and features fairly well.
I haven't seen the book about "restoring" council houses but sounds interesting!

Lucky you!

Look for websites and books on 'mid-century interiors'. You should have no trouble picking up furniture try ebay, second hand furniture shops, local free recycling sites etc

Specialist vintage sites can be expensive.

Which overtly olive did you use ? Id it dulux and was it flat matt ? Thanks . Am.using blanca f and ball in bathroom as is a mid century shade and ita onlu a small space so not too expensive .
I have installed a sexond hand kitchen from the 70 s andnits quite cool . I find second hand 50s stuff really expensive at times but got a couple of woven chairs with metal legs from a cat boot dealer for 35 each which is good.
Made do mid century style sideboards . I got an ercol table , little table and room.divider ( small) for £ 260 . Now we live rurally we dont really have second hand shops nearby but will keep.eyes peeled.
Yes the book 'style council 'is about amazing ex council flats etc done up and it looks amazing.
