Carpet alternatives for hall, stairs, landing - help me decide!

Much as I’d like a light coloured carpet, it would be totally impractical for us, and I don’t want another dark carpet...in fact I’m not sure I want carpet at all. Ours is a classic 1970 house which we are gradually updating and I want it fresh and modern. Are laminates or wood flooring still the most contemporary option? I worry about the slip factor - especially on stairs... Any thoughts/experiences welcome... Smile

I really don't like non-grippy stairs either - sympathise with your problem! We went for a light-ish speckly carpet on the stairs and landing (hard floors in hall and elsewhere downstairs). The speckly nature of the carpet means it really doesn't show any stains at all - it's great! It was a few years ago we bought it, but I think it was this one www.tapi.co.uk/carpet/handel Comes in lots of colours.

I know that wasn't exactly your question, sorry!

We've got some kind of bonded laminate in our hall and I hate it, I would definitely not put it on the stairs! I don't know why we chose it, as it wasn't cheap and the house is Victorian, we've got decent floorboards underneath. Going to go back to those and put a stair runner up the stairs with nice edging things. Could you do that on the stairs?

@FeistySheep that’s good to know - thanks. @idontlikealdi I have been thinking about a stair runner and it would be possible - I bet that will look great in a Victorian house, just don’t know that it would look right if my aim is to modernise the interior of a 70s “box” Hmm

If you have proper landings I would go with a speckle / two tone carpet on the stairs and hard floor landing. Friend of mine has a 60s 70s house and has done this - looks great & v practical

Some thick, cushioned lino for the hall, you can get some that looks like tiles or if you can afford it go for a specialist one where you can have a border round it. That way you can use either a mop & bucket or hard floor cleaner. Get the woodwork on the stairs painted & then get your carpet for the stairs & landing. Make a place to have a bench for taking shoes off & storage for shoes.
