Stripe carpet - Quarter turn in stairs

How much would this bother you, if at all? Stairs carpet has been laid today. My lack of understanding at the time we replaced the order and the measurements were done means that I misunderstood how the stripe would look on the two quarter turns in our stairs.

I though the stripe would go up on the stairs, then turn 45 degrees anti-clockwise on the flat part and then turn another 45 degrees anti-clockwise as it went up the stairs again.

But that’s not how it was measured and not how it’s been laid, and the fitters and shop are saying that there’s nothing that can be done.

Is it something I should just live with?

Looks fine to me

Zarinea · 15/04/2021 17:35

Looks fine to me too!

EggysMom · 15/04/2021 17:37

It would be very difficult to do the two 45-deg turns you mention, you'd end up with twice the joins, visible joins, etc. Stair carpet is manufactured as straight runs.

FelicityBeedle · 15/04/2021 17:38

So you wanted it at an angle on the flat square? I thjnk what you’ve got is the nicest way

4PawsGood · 15/04/2021 17:38

I think this way looks better.

Alsohuman · 15/04/2021 17:40

What’s wrong with it?

Aquamarine1029 · 15/04/2021 17:40

I personally think what you envisioned would look really, really weird.

Roselilly36 · 15/04/2021 17:41

Looks perfect to me from the photo OP, what are you disappointed with?

SoupDragon · 15/04/2021 17:41

I've just googled lots Ipoh images of striped carpets and yours looks fine. I think it looks better than the ones where the carpet turns TBH!

Luckyelephant1 · 15/04/2021 17:41

So do you mean you wanted the stripes diagonal on the flat square? That would have looked awful I think, this way looks great.

WellTidy · 15/04/2021 19:54

Well that’s unanimous! Which makes it easier as there isn’t anything that can be done. I wanted the flat square to be like this or, failing that, like this

Neither of which are possible.

So I’m glad that the unanimous verdict is that it looks good!

The first picture is different as the carpets don't stop in a square turn the stairs are making the turn. I think the split turn looks very odd and could have an impact on durability/trip hazard.

I think what you got is the best option.

Fastforwardtospring · 15/04/2021 20:00

To have it like your picture means it would need to be taken away and stitched, it can’t be done properly in one fitting.

Sunnyday321 · 15/04/2021 20:03

That picture states a winding staircase, yours is a dog leg.

WellTidy · 15/04/2021 20:09

I appreciate that the staircase in the photo is difee free rent to mine. I had thought that the carpet would be cut at a 45 degree angle and not at the same angles as the carpet on the winding staircase is cut. My mistake. The chap who came here to measure and I see clearly talking at cross purposes. There are two staircases here, and one of them has quarter turns and one is more of a winding staircase. I can have the carpet fitted at an angle on the more winding part without it having an impact on Dalit ability, but not on the section with quarter turns (which is the photo in the OP).

Thanks for the feedback though - I’m sure I will get used to it!

I'm with you OP. The stripe should be continuous.
Not sure if there's anything can be done now though.

I have striped carpet on my stairs and it is exactly like yours. Can’t imagine having the diagaonal Confused .

Alsohuman · 15/04/2021 20:12

That’s a completely different configuration of stairs. It’s impossible on OP’s.
Martinisarebetterdirty · 15/04/2021 20:13

I’m with you OP too, the stripes should match up. Having said that it still looks nice so I hope you learn to love it.

I guess you had a vision and when it wasn't done like the vision you had, you were disappointed, as anyone would be, so I'm sorry for you. However, yours does look like the one under the example with the biggest stripes and it looks fine. The second example with the thin stripes on the diagonal looks bloody awful, so you got the right way in the end IMHO
ConnieCaterpillar70 · 15/04/2021 20:26

I'm in the soft furnishing trade, OP. Yours is laid perfectly for a half/quarter landing.

We never put a join in a carpet on a high tread area. Our carpet fitter would point blank refuse.

WellTidy · 15/04/2021 20:29

Thanks Connie, that’s the same message as I’m getting. Anything other than what has been laid on a quarter turn would have an impact on durability. We’ve purposely chosen a carpet with durability in mind - Crucial Trading Mississippi Premium - so I’m reassured. I’m sure I will get used to it, it’s just not what I thought I was having (and I’ve waited four months for it, so I’ve thought about it a lot).
