Painting pissing me off

Decided to re paint my walls from magnolia to white. Did the edging first then the rest. Walls seem to be ok but my god the edging is a horrendous mess. It's quite neat for the first time I've done it but the paint and wall itself is so patchy. I've done extra layers and it's still not looking at better. I've attached a picture to hopefully get some ideas of why it's gone wrong around the edging. (I did forget to mix the paint, but have since done this everytime I've used it and like I say walls seems to be ok)

I posted on this thread that painting is hard work. posters gave lots of tips, see if there are any tricks that could help maybe.

I hate painting. It’s really is hard work. Good luck, It will be worth it when it’s finished, it just might take 5 times longer and several more coats of paint than anticipated!

@Youdontknowwhatyouronabout thank you I'll have look. I totally underestimated how much work it is. I just thought oh I'll paint the hall and bathrooms no big deal. Turns out it was the biggest deal and I can't stand it. I have new found respect for painters and decorators.

My advice is frog tape for straight edges, it will occasionally take a little paint off under it but easy to touch up. Alternatively if you're painting the walls white then just do the ceiling as well - looks perfect then! I think the problem is the paint you're using -- is it cheap? (hope that isn't too rude!) I would just always recommend spending a bit more if you can, doesn't have to be Farrow and Ball (overrated anyway) but dulux is a generally a pretty good bet. I've just used Timeless (white) and it is honestly gorgeous, so much nicer than when I've previously used a cheap all purpose white. (which I have numerous times!

@Tal45 it's a Johnson's paint. Sorry I have no idea what's the best or worst paint around. So just seen this one in a big tub and went with it. My brother is coming round and to try to try and save orb

I feel your pain. I decided to cram the painting for 3 rooms into a week.
The preparation takes ages. The painting is hard work, especially when you are painting the same colour ( next day you can see patches where you have missed bits!)

Invest in decent brushes and rollers. Take your time.

Respect to painters and decorators everywhere!

Did you clean the walls down before you started? Prep work is shit but the key to an amazing finish.

unsure111 · 15/04/2021 22:36

@KetchupOnTheFloor I'm embarrassed to say I didn't 👀 I remember reading about washing the walls on here years ago but I don't know why I didn't and now I feel stupid. I was looking again today at the walls and the walls themselves are actually quite good and neat but it's literally just the tops like on the picture that have turned out like this. So I don't understand why the rest of the walls are fine but the edging on top isn't.

Did you stir the paint well before using it?

The pigments sink to the bottom, so the top isn’t the same as the bottom of the tin.

steppemum · 15/04/2021 22:43

It is the paint.

good quality paint and painting really isn't hard.
bad paint and it looks patchy, needs about 5 coats etc.

I have just led a team repainting a church hall. I started with the entrance hall and got really frustrated at how crap the paint was going on despite good prep, sanding walls etc etc.
Then apint started peeling. I went online and looked at reviews and they all said same, crap paint.

Bought good quality paint and we have painted the rest of the hall, all rooms, no problem, 2 coats, looks great (over a colour underneath too)

steppemum · 15/04/2021 22:46

don't need to sugar soap etc walls, (unless kitchen) but shiny/silk finish underpaint needs sanding. All walls benefit from wiping with a cloth and flash.

bad paint was Valspar scrubbable white emulsion (B&Q own brand
(this is not the same as the paint mixed at the colour mix desk, that is good paint)
good paint, Dulux scrubbable white emulsion

I've never washed walls down and haven't had a problem. I think not stirring it will have been the issue. I use the small rollers to take the paint over as much of the cutting in at the edges as possible. Often brush marks are really obvious when the rest of a wall has been rollered.
