Denby but not denby

I have returned a set of denby dinner plates because they were too fat to fit in the dishwasher easily. Any suggestions of crockery that have the gorgeous, timeless style but is more practical for dishwashing?

Emma Bridgewater or Cornishware are my favourites

Here is a photo but in reality they were much more subtle. They are called rose quartz and exclusive to John Lewis

Have you looked at Next? They had some styles similar to Denby.

2021ishere2021 · 08/04/2021 08:16

@FlatEarthling

I'll look at next again. I was worried they wouldn't wear well. My friend has plates from next and she said they got scruffy quick. Maybe she is a one off though?

We've got the Sophie Conran for Portmeirion set from John Lewis seven years and still going strong I love the fact that the plates and dishes are irregular shapes and think they are very beautiful

Eskarina1 · 08/04/2021 08:23

Could it be the design you bought? I've never had a problem getting mine in the dishwasher. It was my mum's and bits of it are twenty years old - still looks great.

Ladybigbeach · 08/04/2021 08:25

I’ve got a cheap set like this OP, they only just fit in the dishwasher. I wonder if it’s more the design than Denby.

madamecake · 08/04/2021 08:26

As a PP mentioned, do look at other Denby sets, we’re on our third dishwasher since getting our set 15 years ago and even the large plates fit in no problem.

moochingtothepub · 08/04/2021 08:29

I had this, bought a different denby range

2021ishere2021 · 08/04/2021 08:31

Are they not usually this fat? Maybe it is my dishwasher but I only have about 8 of those wide slots.

They look deeper than normal OP, mine look quite shallow in comparison. What set were they?

2021ishere2021 · 08/04/2021 08:37

@madamecake

Rose quartz from John Lewis.

madamecake · 08/04/2021 08:42

Mine will fit in the narrow slots too

Re: Next, we have a dinner set from there, which we got maybe 12 months ago. All of the dinner plates now have chips / little breaks in them. It’s not been the most sturdy set. Worst £40 I ever spent.

2021ishere2021 · 08/04/2021 09:26

Thanks everyone. I will look at denby again (I do like the quality) and try and get something slimmer

I think the issue is the style of plate these are “coupe” which are a deeper shape. If you have a look on the Denby website they still have ranges in an older/more dishwasher friendly shape too! Even better if you have Tesco clubcard you can spend vouchers there and make it less spendy Grin

As an aside, I'm wondering how robust you are all finding your Denby crockery?

I've just been purchasing white tablewear from Next as easily & cheaply replaced-for some reason our crockery always always ends up chipped & reluctant to spend £££ if I will need to keep replacing.

I find Denby to be worth every penny, not a chip or scratch in 15 years. I can be quite clumsy and heavy handed and dropped a mug once and it didn’t break.

@Gassylady

I didn't even know you get "coupe" plates. This is an education for me Smile

Our Denby has been going strong for almost 20 years. A couple of chips and breakages after dropping items but we the colour/pattern is still available so easily replaced.

I’ve got Denby White and I think it’s marvellous. Mine us around 14 years old and in great condition, no chips or anything. The only thing I’ve noticed is the occasional grey pencil mark, where they’ve scratched from being stacked on top of each other These come off easily with a magic erasure and look as good as new

I got most of mine from the Denby outlet and TK Maxx

Beebumble2 · 09/04/2021 23:08

20 years plus for our everyday set, a couple of chips on a dinner plate. 10 years so far for the holiday house set.
I always buy 8 of each item, so when there’s only two of us they get used in rotation.

Thank you soooo much for the Tesco Clubcard tip, you've made my day!!!! I had absolutely no idea about this. Just cashed in a load to order from the Denby website, happy days! GrinGrinGrin

It really is worth the money, I’ve got a huge collection of imperial Blue which I’ve had for almost 31 years as I got most of it for my 21st

It’s all still in daily use and still looks as good as new, sometimes I add in other mix and match colours like Greenwich it’s all been through quite a number of dishwashers in that time

HamCob · 14/04/2021 16:52

Another vote for the real thing. I bought a dinner set with money that we were given as wedding gift about 15 years ago and it's still going strong without any chips. I think I've had to replace a couple of pieces that were dropped on the floor but the rest looks as good as new.
If you are ever passing Denby which is just outside Derby, then their factory shop is well worth a visit - it's huge and stocks seconds which I can't tell apart from their other stuff. It's usually about half the price too.
