Interior design - how to decorate adjoining living room and dining room

We live in a good size detached house (not massive but not not tiny rooms), living room is quite a bit bigger than the dining room and they are connected by double sliding doors. Doors have come off and we plan to replace them with new doors but haven't decided what type.

Living room has a large, low window, at the front, and one small window to the adjoining wall on the left. So it is quite light.

Dining room has a window and patio door so again quite light.

Sun tends to come in the front as it is south facing so it is a bit warmer and brighter in there.

I would like a palette of green / grey but not something too dark as I don't think the room can take it. I am thinking one for the rooms in a green / grey or blue / grey and the other one in a lighter colour like a complementary off white or light grey.

In my mind I like the idea of the dining room in a cosy green but I wonder whether the darker colour should be in the living room as it is bigger and probably a bit lighter?

I think the darker colour in the smaller room (dining room is at the back right?) sounds lovely. There are some nice green/greys that look great yet totally different in both bright and dark rooms. Maybe French gray by farrow and ball

Thank you Penguin I have been looking at F&B colours and hadn't come across this one but it looks like the kind of colour I was looking for.

Yes the smaller room is the dining room at the back. I like the idea of a cosy dining room with a nice big table and I want a bit of colour in the rooms.

This is a photo from Pinterest but looks similar to my dining room in terms of size and where the door / window is.

Living room would be to the right of the pic.

That pic is lovely - as is that shade of green. Goes well with the wooden table, will you have similar furniture Elder?
Some nice bookshelves maybe against that wall and carry the colour over to the door/window wall too?

ElderMillennial · 22/03/2021 08:34

Thank you @PenguinBarnotBird

I would like a large, rectangular wooden table. I didn't have in mind one as "modern" as that one but I suppose it is just a simple wooden table.

I would also love bookshelves or a bookshelf but DH is not keen on this, and we have a radiator along that back wall so I'm not sure where we would put them.

I'm leaning towards Mizzle or skylight by farrow and ball

I also like Dulux tranquil dawn

All sound lovely colours to me - time to get some tester pots. I have a similar layout to you and have gone for the darker colour in the dining room, feels very cozy and a little bit glam. Kept the lounge lighter and carried the colours through in the cushions and curtains. French Grey is lovely by F&B. I’m also in love with Dulux Heritage Sage Green (it’s a little bit deeper), similar to the Pinterest picture shared.

ElderMillennial · 26/05/2021 16:23

I've got the tester pots and I tried a few yesterday. Those were the ones I liked

Skylight first then the Dulux one and then mizzle.

It's hard to imagine it all over the walls though and I'm hoping Skylight doesn't look too cold.

depending on what you want try to do as much skylight as you can - I found it too grey cold after a previous shot at colours ( but but but - that is just a personal opinion. Ended up with Parma Grey ( which is quite blue )

BasiliskStare · 28/05/2021 13:35

Sorry I meant the biggest test area of skylight you can not the biggest area . I found it too cold - other opinions are available.

Duvetflower · 29/05/2021 11:59

Definitely try a big sample of Skylight. I find pale blues can get a lot bluer once you've done a whole room. I have it in an East facing room and it's just the right side of too blue for me.

ElderMillennial · 29/05/2021 12:33

I have it on a piece of paper and looked at it again this morning. In the dining room it looked more green and in the living room it looked more blue

I was planning to get it mixed from Valspar so I'm slightly apprehensive about it being the wrong colour but DH doesn't want me to try it in a larger area on the freshly primed walls!

I might though, since we are getting that colour anyway

It sounds like you have already got it on paper - if you have a bit of spare wallpaper you could paint it on the back and it would be bigger & I suspect masking tape to stick it up won't spoil the wall

But I am not a decorator

Best of luck - I suspect it will look nice if you have seen it in different lights. There are so many opinions about mixed paints - I had one done to replicate an F&B colour - it wasn't and it lit up like the nuclear factory where Homer Simpson works in certain lights. Other people swear by them - and has obviously worked brilliantly for them ( not helpful I know )

Could you get the very smallest tin of Valspar and try that out. More expensive than a tester pot but less expensive than having it all repainted if it doesn't work ( I have experience here - had hall stairs and landing done in a matching F&B colour - it wasn't the same - lived with it because of cost of original painting with it but never liked it and eventually had it repainted in proper F&B )

Again if you have a cheap roll of wallpaper paint the back of it rather than just e.g. a sheet of printer paper and it gives a better idea. Sorry if this is what you have already done

All best wishes

ElderMillennial · 29/05/2021 16:54

No it was just A4 paper SS I didn't have any wallpaper

Um going to use the rest of the tester pot on some wall

We've had Valspar before and you're right that it doesnt always match so I'll have to be we careful about that

@ElderMillennial

This is not the question you asked but just to say if you want white ceilings an interior designer friend of mine said Crown white paints are great - so - she would always go with the original F&B , Little Green etc for emulsion on walls - but if you want white ceilings she reckons F& B etc not worth it and she would use Crown.

Not sure that helps but it is a tip I had Grin

All best luck to you - I am sure it will look lovely

ElderMillennial · 30/05/2021 09:36

Thanks @BasiliskStare

Ceilings are almost done as we are literally painting atm and one of us needs to go and buy the wall paint today from B&Q

Not sure what DH has used though Grin

F and B Mizzle for a greeny shade would be my suggestion

ElderMillennial · 31/05/2021 09:09

We weren't as keen on mizzle when we got the sample so we went for Skylight but got it made up by Valspar

DH painted the living room yesterday. I can't decide what I think about it. I do like it but not sure what we'll do with the rest of the room. We want a wooden floor but not sure what colour sofa etc we will get!
