Is black granite dated?

I have a cream shaker kitchen with black granite worktops, we put it in 14 years ago and it’s in need of a revamp.

The thing is we’re looking to move in the next 2/3 years so I don’t want to spend a fortune and also need it to be something that will be saleable.

I’m going to paint the cupboards but don’t know what to do about the worktop which is black granite. I don’t like it at all anymore and think it looks dated but don’t know whether it’s worth changing it or what to change it to.

I've had solid wood - nightmare and went black around the sink no matter what we did.

Currently have black granite. It's ok, I'm a bit meh about it if I'm honest. I think (trend wise) it's on its way out. I wouldn't replace it if we did the kitchen right now. You can only put certain cleaners on it.
If I was viewing houses, granite obviously wouldn't make me walk away or anything and a lot depends on light/room size (black granite does bring light down in my opinion) but like I say, I wouldn't be looking to install it in a new project.

Keep! I agree that it is dated and if I was renovating a kitchen I wouldn't choose it. However, so much can be done to update it as you have shaker units.
I've added some photos from pintrest which I think look great and are current. They're potentially just a paint job away.
Would be useful to know how old your house is? A few accessories can also bring it up to date. E.g if it is a victorian property then a vintage wooden cabinet on the wall can add some interest. Updating the handles on the cabinets and installing some vintage style lamps (dowsing and reynolds are great for both). A few colour complementing poster or prints on the wall and then a couple of styling objects like a large vase with dried flowers or candlesticks etc. The benefit is that all these things you could take with you when you move!
Would you feel comfortable uploading some photos of your kitchen, or maybe one a similar style to yours?

We are looking for a new house at the moment and I'd be very happy with black granite in a kitchen. I love the look of a wooden work top but having had them several times over the years I know they are a constant worry about how wet they are getting, are they staining, etc. Funnily enough we currently have wood effect formica in our kitchen and it's great!

My (lovely) wooden worktops are an absolute PITA. I'd go for black granite.

Can you live with it for now? Instead of sinking the money into the kitchen accept you'd lose it off asking price to update?

I'd rather lower asking to reflect a kitchen in need of updating than a shiny new kitchen I was going to rip out.

If you’re planning to move I wouldn’t waste money on a kitchen.

OP I really like a pp’s idea of switching out the granite just on the island (if you have one ). We used to have granite on the long run of worktop including round the sink, and then on the island we had oak. Adding in the wood and lovely texture stopped everything feeling so hard and “shiny” and worked really well.

Comefromaway · 10/03/2021 12:26

Can you post a picture of it as I'm about to have a cram/ivory shaker style kitchen and having hated wood at my last house am undecided between black or dark grey granite.

Kottbullar · 10/03/2021 12:28

I think it looks dated with certain kinds of cabinets.

However I wouldn't get rid of it if you are selling. Just paint the walls and cupboards to freshen it up.

SpringSunshineandTulips · 10/03/2021 12:32

We have black granite and oak cupboards. I think it prob is dates now as it seems to be white / glossy kitchens that are in. Saying that I love mine.

CommanderBurnham · 10/03/2021 12:48

Yes a bit outdated but hands down the most practical material. Mine has been in about 15 years and I plan to keep it for another 5-10. Even then I might just get the units painted. It's indestructible and always looks polished and clean.

Who decides what is "in" and what is "out" when it comes to kitchen design?

If people go with the latest design then surely it just dates more quickly. Are there designs that are more classic that don't date?

Pop onto Pinterest and search for black granite kitchen. I think that one of the reasons things feel dated, is because our eye is trained by the images that we’re exposed to.
If you still feel the same after seeing lots of lovely images then fair enough. But you might find you start to love it again...and get some ideas for the doors.
