Kitchen laminated cupboards paint advice

My kitchen is looking awful really worse for wear. Cupboards are cheap laminated and are peeling in places and chipped with water damage in ones by sink and dishwasher. Thought we could just paint them but apparently painting laminate is a bit more complicated and I would need to repair laminate first! Has anyone done this and it’s turned out ok? Was thinking if replacing doors only but not sure how much this would cost.

I've googled this quite a bit and it seems if the laminate lifts clean off you can paid them but if it's stuck in places and not in others you can't.

Kitchen in house I'm buying is bubbling in places so I've replacing the doors as one of my jobs to do in time.

Just get new replacement kitchen doors we got ours from Universal kitchen doors they were really good and very helpful. Look them up at www.universalkitchendoors.com

Get a hairdryer on the laminate until it's really quite warm and pull it of. Obviously bit by bit peeling each part you've just hairdryed. Then prime, sand, prime, sand, paint. I've done this and it works really well. If the laminate was in good condition you could sand, prime, sand, prime, sand, paint. But you say it isn't so remove it. Or order new doors as PP suggested Grin

I did this and I wouldn’t recommend it. We were very diligent with priming, sanding etc but the paint wore badly and chipped. It was only a stop gap solution because we were planning an extension eventually, but you might be better to save your money and buy new doors.

If you do go ahead, a tip is to check if your hinges gave a clip to release them. I didn’t know about this and unscrewed my doors to paint them and had trouble getting them to hang well afterwards.

Hi everyone thank you very much for your replies, it’s helped me decide. Yeah I’ve read that it should be considered a temporary solution to paint them as it doesn’t last long. My husband hates DIY (I’m disabled so can’t do it) and can’t see him peeling off the laminate with a hairdryer! Think we will wait and replace them.
