Painting over Farrow and Ball estate emulsion with the modern emulsion version

In our dining room, we have the chimney breast and two alcoves painted in Farrow and Ball Paean Black estate emulsion. I absolutely love the colour and mattness of it, but it's getting a lot of marks on it on the chimney breast, where it's close to our table. I'm thinking about painting just the front of the chimney breast in the modern emulsion to cover the marks and make it wipeable and hard wearing. Is the finish very different? Would it look very different?

Yes, it's pretty different and it will be very noticeable side-by-side. Estate Emulsion is about 2% sheen, Modern about 7%. I'm afraid you'll have to do the whole wall, but be warned that you will lose the matte finish that you like.

PS do you have a colour card to hand? From memory I think there are chips at the back which show the different sheen levels in modern / estate / eggshell etc.

Thanks for your comment. Perhaps I should try and patch up the wall, so paint over it with more estate emulsion? Obviously it'll just happen again but if it's easy to patch up, perhaps that's preferable.... ?

Cross post! No colour card, the paint's been on for maybe a couple of years nearly.

Nothing to be lost from trying! Use the same paint as before if you still have some. It's possible that the colour on the wall might have faded a bit, but you won't know until you start touching up.

Argh, sorry for confusion, seems I changed my name midway through! Thank you, I'm going to give it a go... Can't wait to get it (hopefully) pristine again.
