What "wood" you do?

We've fallen in love with a 1990s house because it has so many great features - big, solid, spacious, sweeping lawns, old trees. But, as was popular back then, it has so much timber, everywhere! Soaring cathedral ceilings, polished wooden floors, bathroom vanities, kitchen cupboards, breakfast bar etc are all so woody, and shiny varnish to boot. Now, I love timber in a house, but there's just so much. I would hate to paint it, and it would be a huge job anyway. The vendor is an older single man, and everything, apart from timber is dark blue - feature walls, carpets in bedrooms, upholstered furniture, rugs. There's also a roofed veranda running around the house, which has glassed sections above the windows, but still makes it a bit dark. I'm trying to think of how to lighten the rooms, and would appreciate some thoughts, o wise ones. Obviously replacing furniture and painting feature walls ligther colours, replacing heavy curtains with floaty linen, lots of palms in rattan pots, mirrors. Anything else that would help to make it lighter and more modern? Thanks!

Varnished wood can be covered using a Zinsser primer and any colour of satinwood or eggshell finish paint instead. Just painting the inside window frames can make a huge difference. There are companies that will spray paint wooden kitchens and that makes them look completely different. Painting ceilings and doors light colours immediately lifts a room. Adding mirrors to reflect light works too.

I live in a very oak house. Oak beams, oak kitchen, oak doors etc floors however are creamy colored and walls are a pale colour. It's fairly bright despite dark grey granite kitchen surfaces. Start with repainting walls and ceilings, see how it looks.

My parents had the veranda thing and it did make the inside room dark. But we also used the veranda all summer. He insisted we ate there all summer. He was right despite it being a shag.

I have an oak beam holding up my fireplace. If that fails one day, the side of the house will fall down. Its about 250 years old.

I have a solid oak dining table and matching sideboard and coffee tables. I bough them for £1800 8 years ago when we moved in. And they are here to stay. I don’t do Instagram houses. I like my own taste. Everything someone else has wouldn’t suit my home. I like traditional

Sorry hit post too soon!

I like light grey/cream walls. I have the sun setting in the evening in the living room which makes it light. But during the day it can be cool so light paint is a must.

I’m not a huge fan of wood in the kitchen so I’d be changing the kitchen cupboard doors- and getting rid of wood in the bathroom. I’d definately keep the wood floors, bare with a very light varnish. It sounds great though- I dream of high ceilings and a big garden with trees!

Thank you so much for your answers - we missed out on the woodsy house anyway! I regret the 1000-yr old trees in the garden more than anything... :(
