Adding downlighting

We want to install down lights in our dark, north facing lounge. An electrician has said he'll need to get under the floors upstairs (2 bedrooms and a landing) to install the wiring so all the floors will need taking up.

Is there any other way as it seems a lot of disruption as the bedrooms have laminate floor so will need replacing if taken up. Don't want to waste another electrician time coming out to quote if that's the answer

I saw a post by an electrician on Facebook, who had installed down lights in a kitchen. Someone asked if floorboards needed to be taken up and he said no, had pulled the wires through from the ceiling. Perhaps it depends on construction of house and size of room. This looked a fairly new property.

Thanks that's interesting, our house was built in the 80's so fairly modern. I was thinking the same, but wondered if it meant more plastering to make it good, but that would still be better than lifting the floors.

We had them put in every room in our house and no floorboards were taken up at any point. Our house was built in 1996.

We had downlights installed in extended kitchen. “Old” part of the kitchen was built in 1956 and our electrician still managed to cut holes in ceiling and feed the wires through. No extra plastering required just holes cut out for downlights.

Thanks all, this is positive news and sounds so much simpler. Will arrange another couple of quotes from different tradesmen Smile
