Cost to get wallpaper hung

Never had wallpaper, can anyone give me a rough idea at cost of having a 7.5 mt x 2.3 mt area hung. In the SE London subs if that makes a difference.

TIA

Similar area to you - bit further out maybe - mid size Victorian terrace. Had wallpaper done in hall, stairs and landing late last year. Cost just under £1000.

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 13/02/2021 18:36

Thanks @SaintCharlotte, I've only got 1 feature wall to cover, and will buy the paper myself, I'm expecting nowhere near the 1000 mark, I'm guessing it's a half day job....

Okay. It was the 7.5m that made me think the area might be comparable.

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 16/02/2021 07:05

StCharlotte, thanks for your help! I actually have no clue on this one as it's a first with wallpaper (too frightened to try it ourselves!). The area to be covered is 1 wall 7.5 x 2.5, obstacles 1 radiator and 3 double sockets, no windows or doors. I guess a hall, stair case and landing is trickier and more time consuming.

Correction 7.5 mts x 2.3 mts

It’s time consuming but could you try with a cheap roll first to see if you can do it. Or if the wallpaper you like is not too expensive buy extra. We wallpapered for the first time and are very surprised at how well it turned out. We used the ready made paste from Wilkos and it was excellent. We ended up returning a roll as had 0 wastage and we aren’t particularly handy! Watch a few you tube vids.
Our hall stairs and landing cost 1400, 10 years ago. So we gave the feature wall a go ourselves!

MaryIsA · 16/02/2021 07:16

It cost us £2k to get an entire room done, but loads and loads and loads of prep work.

I’d guess you’d be looking at something like £180.

Bluntness100 · 16/02/2021 07:20

A decorator charges about 150 a day here, for painting or wallpapering. I doubt it’s a half day job, maybe slightly more, they need to set up, they need to cut the paper to size if there’s a pattern and they need to then obvs put it on the wall.

I think I’d guess I’d pay a day.

ScarletPower · 16/02/2021 07:28

What's up there at the moment?

We had our bedroom done (in West Yorkshire) last summer. To strip the existing paper off, prep to make the walls good, lining paper, textured paper, and also to strip, prep and re-paper a ceiling was about £600. It ended up taking ages because the decorator was a friend of a friend and kept having days off or finishing early. The walls were a blooming mess when he took the paper off, so it needed a load of prep. Looked excellent when it was finished though

We were quoted £900 for a staircase and small landing. I didn't go ahead with that though.

I found it difficult to get someone to come out and even look as good decorators are really busy and booked up

Bluntness100 · 16/02/2021 07:29

Yes there is that what’s up there at the moment? Ans the odds of finding someone to do one wall will be low, but you can post on your local Facebook page asking for recommendations. Someone might have a day spare.

MsTSwift · 16/02/2021 07:31

We did a massive room as a family. Took us 4 of us 5 days. Exhausting but looks great. Was last Easter our holiday was cancelled and in lockdown so nothing else to do. I feel so proud when I sit in that room 😁

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 16/02/2021 08:35

Thanks for all the replies suggestions and pricing estimates.

The wall is painted and smooth 2014 new build so in good condition.

Looks like I'm being a bit optimistic with the time frame of the job. I'll get some quotes in at somepoint once lockdown is lifted. My local Facebook page has numerous painter/decorators and handyman advertising no job too small, but otherwise looks like we may have to attempt it ourselves 😬

Give it a go! Honestly we found it okay. We are going to take a day off to wall paper another room when the children are back at school!
Our feature wall took us about 6 hours, very slowly, painstakingly slow, and a pattern that had to be very accurately matched. Wall is about the same size as yours. No radiator on the wall but two lights and 4 sockets/switches.

Bagelsandbrie · 16/02/2021 22:38

It’s so easy to do it yourself. Especially just one wall. Watch lots of You tube videos and go for it. I’d never pay someone to do it. Takes hardly any time at all too.

Cuddling57 · 16/02/2021 22:42

I can't believe the prices people are paying!
Although yours sounds like it shouldn't be too much money I'd give it a go yourself!

TableNiner · 17/02/2021 09:26

Quotes can vary so much with this. We had a job involving wallpapering a feature wall and laying a laminate floor. One quote was £400 and one £2000.

JaninaDuszejko · 17/02/2021 19:13

Try it yourself. DH did our bathroom. Only 2 drops had no obstacles but he did a fab job. It was relatively expensive paper but he reckoned that helped because it behaved beautifully (and he had to paste the walls rather than the paper which also made things easier).

LyndaSnellsSniff · 17/02/2021 20:03

We've just been quoted £215 to prep, line and paper a feature wall. We're in Surrey. They said it'll be 2 days.
I'm happy with that quote.

Midlifephoenix · 17/02/2021 20:10

If it's wallpaper ready then really it is pretty straightforward- watch a couple youtube videos. My first wallpaper experience was a bathroom - a bit fiddly but I did it (long before YouTube!).
It is such a small job you are more likely to get a handyman to do it than a decorator, unless you have other jobs that need doing.

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 19/02/2021 19:23

Thanks everyone, I might just try it.... I'm more worried about cutting the ceiling and skirt edges straight.....

Fist bump for wallpapering solidarity! I will be papering today after the paper has sat in the hallway for weeks so I'll keep you company! I've papered precisely one wall in my life before, and stupidly chose a geometric lined paper that was VERY unforgiving - but it was still fine.

I'm now doing 2 bedrooms. 1 is small, but has quite a few fiddly bits. The other is large but I'm only doing 2 opposite walls and painting the other 2. Good luck Smile

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 20/02/2021 11:08

@MutteringDarkly, best of luck, yes keep me posted. I'm going for a damask design, so will need to match accurately.

DH is a decorator (but in Yorkshire so probably cheaper). He won’t strip etc only the actual decorating.

He charges £130 per day or £20 per roll if just papering (no painting skirtings etc). This is cash in hand ‘side’ work so expect to pay a little more if someone is self employed.

MutteringDarkly · 20/02/2021 11:43

1 wall done. Paper tears easily, I've discovered! I didn't pay much for this one, so perhaps not surprising. It's fine with care though. Having a coffee before I carry on Smile

MutteringDarkly · 20/02/2021 20:55

I finished the small room today. Pattern had quite a large repeat so there was an annoying amount of wastage, but not much to be done about it! All went well apart from a certain amount of swearing around the electrical sockets, and the light switch Grin
