What colour should I paint my living room?

DH and I can't agree. We want something that's bright and fresh in the summer but warm and cosy in the winter (not grey!). The curtains need to be changed and we're going to put carpet down so ignore those.

I was thinking about a nice sunny yellow but not sure that would work. I'm really bad at visualising what it will look like (even the dulux visualiser app doesn't help)!

Bright & fresh AND warm & cosy is quite a lot to pull off with a single colour!

I think I’d be tempted to paint the room some kind of green as that’s the only colour I can think of that can be both fresh and cozy 🤔

Some inspiration here:

I especially like Bancha, but doubt I’d be brave enough to paint a whole room with it. It would go with the colour of your floor and sofa though...

TheOnceAndFutureQueen · 12/02/2021 19:32

I know, that's why yellow was the only colour I could think of as it can pull off both!

You could always go for yellow blind or curtains, and then something like Jasmine white for the walls.

Boonlark · 12/02/2021 19:40

I went for dulux blush pink as it's both light and fresh and still cosy now that it's colder.

We have a dark, west facing lounge and we have denim drift with white woodwork, light sofa and pink or rose gold accessories. It's maybe not as light as you're thinking but it's such a lovely colour that it feels nice.

cluecu · 12/02/2021 20:14

Oh and in the dark mornings or evenings it's really cosy. But when it's summer it feels pretty and relaxing to me Smile

Farrow and Ball's India Yellow. Or Johnstone's knockoff version of this colour.

EllaPaella · 13/02/2021 08:04

If you are on Facebook join the Farrow and Ball fan page, so much inspiration even if you don't want to use Farrow and Ball paint. I don't think yellow would work with your floor.

I just painted my lounge green, a cals par copy of f&b ‘breakfast room green’ together with a valspar mixed paint in ‘gargoyle green’ that’s a kind of pistachio colour, a really good but lighter version of the f&b. It took ages to find the right greens, as I didn’t want anything too blue, too grey, too yellow or too brown - my son calls the new lounge ‘Goldilocks green’ for this reason Grin

HostessTrolley · 13/02/2021 11:04

Valspar - sorry!

alltheadrenalin · 13/02/2021 11:05

What about mint green, can offset it with more neutral colours

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 13/02/2021 15:44

The OP has said they're going to carpet the room.

I read an article the other day about how to pick the right shade when you want pretty much what you have said you want. The blogger said to go for a 'dirty' version of the colour so it's not too vivid. Something like Dulux Wild Primrose could look really good. It's light and soft - if you Google it you'll find lots of photos showing what it looks like it different settings.

Bluntness100 · 13/02/2021 15:47

I’d go for a pale sage green. Yellow is a very niche taste to be honest.

Bluesheep8 · 14/02/2021 07:35

I'd say pale green too.

Seatime · 14/02/2021 07:45

The room needs warming up. Go for a bright golden yellow, think buttercup yellow. Take a risk and try it.

Benjamin Moore Silken Pine, Vapor Trails, Guilford Green are from the warm side of the Green-Yellow Hue Family,,,

Im not sure it is as risk as the op must like yellow as she’s already considering it. Most folks don’t like a bright yellow living room though. But she must do.
TheOnceAndFutureQueen · 14/02/2021 23:24

I do like the idea of a bright yellow - it's such a happy colour - but don't know if it would be too much to have on the walls. Pale green was another one I was considering so might look into that as DH is less keen on bright colours.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Now off to Google all of the colours mentioned (and probably change my mind another half a dozen times!)

Is the couch staying?

I would not paint the room green with a grey couch. Not nice together.
It would work with yellow. The secret is to tone the yellow down, go for a shade which barely looks yellow on paper, but once the whole room is painting, it has the feel of yellow without the 'in your face' edge that it can have. Agree with the pp who said go for a dirty version of the colour too.

steppemum · 14/02/2021 23:49

so, yellow wise, on this colour sheet, bright yellow is firefly.
But that would be too strong.

Straw would even be too strong.
Instead, use honey pot or sunny day.

Light sage green

Chrispackhamspoodle · 16/02/2021 07:57

Another one for sage green...look at dulux tranquil dawn. Not the whole room.
